Mercury is one of the students at Xavier Institute and one of the New X-Men in training.

Origin

Mercury's powers manifesting.

Before Cessily's powers manifested, Cessily was a cheerleader.

When Cessily Kincaid's powers manifested when she was sixteen. She and her parents were horrified at her mutant condition. Embarrassed by this, they kept her inside and out of public view before sending her to the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning.

Cessily adopted the code name Mercury and eventually became part of the Hellions Squad, the squad of students mentored by Emma Frost and lead by Hellion. She developed a brotherly fondness for Santo Vaccarro, AKA Rockslide and quickly a fascination/romantic interest with her teammate Wither perhaps because her unique physiology made her the female on the squad that was immune to his decay touch. Wither, infatuated with another student, did not return her interest, which he told Julian during the school dance.

Mercury and Rockslide.

Mercury is one of the mutants to retain her powers after M-Day, although because of her past and her parent's disinterest in her she wished she hadn't. After M-Day when the Squads were disbanded, Mercury would be one of the remaining students to earn a place on the team of young X-Men trainees on the New X-Men.

When Nimrod attacks Forge, the New X-Men go down to Texas to helped him. While Mercury is attacking Nimrod, her hands get caught, and X-23 is forced to cut them off to save her, but they do reform. Mercury plays an important part in defeating Nimrod, as she had to keep the time device exposed for Surge to overload it.

Next, in the first issue of the new arc Mercury Falling, Mercury shouts at Emma Frost for trying to get X-23 to leave. They go to town to get some coffee, and they discuss how X-23 likes Julian (Mercury tells her it doesn't matter that she cut of her hands, telling her that she was trying to lose a few pounds). X-23 realizes that they're about to be attacked, and the Cafe explodes. A team of Weapon X agents appear, and X-23 tells them to leave Mercury go. Turns out they're after Mercury and not X-23. Kimura, X-23's former handler escapes with Mercury. At the Facility, they tell Mercury that they need her skin for they're biological engineered creatures, made to hunt down and kill mutants, and ordered by the Purifiers. They manage to detach a living part of her skin, and they put on the three creatures. When X-23 and Hellion bust her out, she defeats two of the creatures by adsorbing they're skin. One escapes. When she arrives back at the mansion, she hugs X-23, crying over how terrible her child life must have been.

In the next arc, Mercury manages to fight Belasco with Dust, and they fend him off for a while.

Next, Mercury goes around the school questioning the students on how old they are, trying to find the youngest student.

In Messiah Complex, Mercury goes with the other New X-Men to attack the Purifiers church. She then takes part in the final battle on Muir Island.

Powers

Mercury has an unique physiology and exists as a non-toxic metallic substance which she can morph into different shapes, solid and liquid. In combat she can use this ability to reshape her limbs into sharp and melee weapons. It also enables her to cling to walls and ceilings. She is unable to transform back into human form.

She is very hard to injure or damage with physical attacks, and it has been suggested that she has a degree of immunity against magical attacks.
She has also proven immune to Wallflower's pheromone powers and Wither's decay touch. The latter suggests that her body is completely non-organic, as Wither's power effects all organic material.

Furthermore she no longer requires to eat, although she does so anyway since it helps her feel more human. She also most often keeps her hair the original orange-reddish color, which suggests that she can change color if she wants.

Her main weakness is electricity, as large bursts of electric current can incapacitate her. Heat can also damage her, shown when she was burned and pieces of her skin were removed with a high-powered laser.
