Marvel imprint, started in 2001, specifically intended for mature readers. MAX issues are not marketed for children, so they are not sold in conventional book or magazine shops. This gives writers creative freedom over what goes into their stories, and are almost always non-canon in 616 continuity. Garth Ennis used this freedom to write stories with brutal realism in the top vigilante title The Punisher.
