Okay. So I'm a comics fan. (DUHHH) and today I decided to run to my comics store and pick up a few issues. When i was browsing the shelves though, I couldn't help but notice all the series which just seem plain pointless. 5 different batman comics? Really? 3 different spider-mans? I lost count of how many Avengers and X-Men series there are. So my question is plainly; Who cares? Will the average joe buy each of those batman comics? At 3 and 4 dollars a pop, probably not. Now I know there are those of you out there who buy all the Avengers, all the X-Men, all the Batman and all the Spider-Man, but... is it really worth it? wouldn't you much rather DC or Marvel use the resources made to make those comics and make the 1 comic better? With more pages? I know I would. Then you could use the money you'd save to add more variety into your comic purchases. If you only bought the 6 batman for instance you could broaden your horizons, read other great series like the Walking Dead, or Invincible, or Fables. Hey you might argue "I don't like anything else. I like only batman. Thats it. Only him. I Love him. He's my hero." Well more power too ya, but why don't buy some Batman graphic novels that you haven't read yet (I highly doubt you've read EVERY single one of them). Or back back back issues of Batman to see where your great hero came from. Maybe I'm just an idiot and have no clue what I'm talking about. But hey, thats my two cents and I'm entitled to them.

Marvel
Formerly known by names including "Atlas" and "Timely", Marvel Entertainment is the publisher of comic books featuring iconic characters and teams such as the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the Avengers, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Thor, Captain America and Daredevil. Currently owned by the Walt Disney Company, Marvel is one of the "Big Two" comic publishers along with DC Comics.
What's with the series that no one cares about?
For X-Men it works; there are so many characters and sub-teams that it really does warrant multiple titles. Otherwise, there would be countless characters that might never see another panel.
I agree that there are too many Batman Titles. How many stories can you tell about one man? I would prefer one longer monthly title.
With, X-Men, I have no problem with it. There are so many different mutants and threats int he X-Universe that each title really feels different. For the most part, you're dealing with completely different characters in each title. X-Factor Deals with Madrox and company, X-Force is Wolverine's black-ops hit squad, X-Men is the regular team pitted against vampires(atm anyway), Uncanny is the main title dealing with the regular team and the five lights, New Mutants is the younger X-Men, X-Men Legacy is Rogue and Magneto in Mumbai fighting the Children of the Vault, and Generation of Hope is going to be about Hope and the New Mutants that she helps. The titles are all different and I relish getting to read each one every month.
As for Spider-Man, there is some side stuff, but for the most part, all you need to read is Amazing, which is be reduced from 3 times a month to only 2.
Batman has way too many titles.
Avengers have a ridiculous number of titles, but they warrant it more than Batman at least. Despite all the mediocre Avengers titles, Children's Crusade and Avenger's Academy are superb.
All in all, it works better for the fans. More choice, different artistic teams, and new directions. If Marvel and DC only put out big large 60 page comic books each month for specific teams or individuals, you lose the whole appeal of arcs and looking forward to the continuation of a new issue. The idea of a full new story every month instead of shorter installations that build up the tension and anticipation seems less appealing in my mind.

all the X-Men series have very different feels to them. I enjoy them all greatly, for the most part. The one outlier is the Curse of the Mutants which I'm really not to fond of." @N7_Normandy said:

"I would certainly be in favor of this. I don't know if it would sell though, meaning Marvel might cancel it quickly. Just look at Young AlliesMan, I want that Cloak & Dagger series >.>, the first three were absolutely horrendous.

I seem to be missing why you posted that in this thread... :)" Man, I want that Cloak & Dagger series >.>, the first three were absolutely horrendous. "
"The idea of a full new story every month instead of shorter installations that build up the tension and anticipation seems less appealing in my mind."You don't need multiple installations that are shorter to build up tension. Look at something like the walking dead. Thats only one series.
And Where there is so many different X-Men comics wouldn't you rather them combine the lesser ones into one comic make it like 7.99 (instead of 10 bucks or whatever it'd be to buy them alone) and then release it monthly? I think then the Hardcore X-Men fans would buy it; cause they were gonna anyway, and then the more casual X fans fans will buy it cause they get more bang for their buck. Thats just what I'd like to see.

The readers don't buy that which they want nor do they support it well enough to keep it going, while the company takes all their best writers and put them on the titles they want to pimp (never thought I'd use that in a sentence) and by taking away the best writers from the stories and characters with potential to shine for characters who are already shining (man I'm using some weird verbs in this post) we lose the oppurtunity to see the characters we want in the light we feel they deserve.
" @N7_Normandy said:I don't actually read any of the current X-titles, but I imagine that the problem would be that, with all the teams off doing their own thing, a combined comic would be chopping and changing locations so much that it would start to annoy..."The idea of a full new story every month instead of shorter installations that build up the tension and anticipation seems less appealing in my mind."You don't need multiple installations that are shorter to build up tension. As someone who used to be loyal to Marvel..yes i bought all the Spider-Man,X-men and Avengers comics. However they all sucks now so i'm not even buying one.

" @N7_Normandy said:what do you mean by combine them? Have a book with multiple stories? It's essentially a moot point, however. If marvel is selling enough of these comics separately, they would never combine them. That said, it might be a decent strategy to employ for less popular titles, not X-Men or Avengers related. For example, I can't imagine they are selling that many copies of Hawkeye and Mockingbird and obviously Young Allies wasn't selling since it got cancelled. So you could package them in a single, cheaper comic in order to increase the appeal of buying it- a case of the proverbial "more bang for your buck.""The idea of a full new story every month instead of shorter installations that build up the tension and anticipation seems less appealing in my mind."You don't need multiple installations that are shorter to build up tension. " @N7_Normandy: Would a Hawkeye and Mockingbird fan be willing to pay extra for a issue if they're only going to read their part anyway though? "that is why it would probably not happen. It was just an example, if a poor one. However, ifMarvel makes it clear that it's either this or cancelling the series, a true Hawkeye and Mockingbird fan might be willing to pay more to support the comic
If you listen to the podcasts at all, you will frequently here G-Man mention how much he hates issues that are split into multiple stories. I know it doesn't exactly add validity, but I just thought it was relevant-enough to bring up :)

It can get very annoying when you have to worry about two simultaneous, yet alternating stories within one issue.

" I just think that there are so many series just lying on shelves that barely anyone will read and I can't see how Marvel/DC or anyone else can make money on them. I've been a Marvel loyalist for a long time. But I'm not going to read all these titles out of loyalty when the quality isn't there.
I read Avengers Academy & Secret Avengers in the Avengers line.
For my X-Books I read Uncanny X-Force & X-Factor.

Avengers Academy is wack. They have worthy Avengers training a bunch of clones while douchebags take up good spaces on ACTUAL Avengers teams.

" Too many Deadpool! Not a fan of Birds of Prey to be honest. "I agree with you about Deadpool, but why don't you like Birds of Prey? It's one of my favorite series.
What may be useless to someone may be interesting to someone else. I'm a big fan of Cap. America and Batman, so I don't mind them having extra books, but it doesn't mean I have to buy all of them (I rarely bother with Batman Confidential, for example). At the same time, I don't much care for the X-Men so extra books seem useless to me. I understand the need for separate books like X-Force and X-Factor (both books I like more than the main titles), but why do we need X-Men and Uncanny X-Men? Because X-Men fans want more stuff featuring their favorite characters. When people don't buy books featuring lesser known characters and teams (even a relatively well known character like Hawkeye couldn't hold his own title past the first arc), sometimes having multiple books featuring popular characters makes sense.

This is something that's always fascinated me - I couldn't imagine ever being able to catch up with even a 10th of the books that are being made every MONTH now, so why make so many? And in such poor quality that they just collect dust? Back when I still read comics (I haven't in a long time) I always stuck with just one version - Uncanny X-Men for example and not the other ones. I assume most people do the same too...
(Yes I'm sure this is a "dead" thread but I just found it and hey, why complain about bring back old threads and then complain when someone tries to make a new
thread about the same subject?)
i think it was a genius idea for spiderman to be one series thrice a month with a half dozen authors rather than a bunch of series once a month each with one author.

Well, then are they enough of us yet to create a change in this system? And as a side note, how does Batman need so many books, when Superman, their mascot, doesn't? Why does Bats get more books, movies, games, cartoons, toys and even porn parodies, than any DC character (or arguably, any comic character in history)? Are the rest not interesting enough, and if so why not invest more talent in the less interesting characters (like prims777 said) MORE interesting, the way they've been doing with Flash's books? This is bothered me for years.
What if I do want to see more of my favorite characters or want to get a new favorite character but the companies won't give them a chance?
I'm not saying they should blow every character up like Deadpool or Wolverine but my point is - if you're going to do it with them... take up some of our offers, too.
