So MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 3’s coming out next year and my question is… why didn’t it come out ten years ago? I’m always mystified whenever a franchise isn’t run into the ground, especially when the demand for sequels is clearly demonstrated. The official story is that both parties had to go through some license wrangle and I figure that’ll slow anything down better than a whole jar of molasses. Still, ten years is a long time. It’s plenty of time for resourceful fans to take matters into their own hands...
See, there’s a freeware program called M.U.G.E.N. which, in short, is a customizable fighting game. As you’d expect, a lot of fans have used it to make their own fantasy versions of existing games. And they've been doing it for years. So, what’s funny about seeing Deadpool and Thor finally make their way into an official fighting game is that I’ve sort-of already seen them in a fighting game… and in “MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 3,” no less.
I figured it’d be a treat to show you Comic Vine maniacs what MVC3 might’ve looked like if Capcom had chosen to continue using classic 2D sprites instead of updating things into 3D. == TEASER ==
This first clip has Ghost Rider, the Thing, Sandman and the Green Goblin, among others.
This one's got Hulk 2099, Human Torch, Mysterio, Deadpool and basically every version of Iron Man.
And this one shows how crazy these fantasy games can get by throwing even more characters into the mix. Here's DC VS. MARVEL VS. CAPCOM, starring Supes, Bats, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Lobo.
If these look like your dream games, then do a search on YouTube. There are dozens upon dozens of these. Now, if you actually want to play these... well, I think you can still download M.U.G.E.N., as well as the characters and patches and what not, but I’ll let you maniacs figure that out for yourselves. I trust you can find a way - - you’re a crafty bunch.
