Thoughts on Marvel's Ultimate Comics Line

I have recently been catching up on Marvel's Ultimate Comics Line. I was a little disappointed with how the Ultimate universe was handled around the whole time of the Ultimates 3, and Ultimatum story line. Too much stuff going on and a lot of thing being handled off panel that I felt should have been seen on panel. So i was reluctant to pick up the line when it was first relaunched. I waited until all the book were on about issue 10 before I began reading them. I must say that I was quite impressed at how all the books (Spider-Man, Ultimates, and X-Men) were very well written and the art for each was on point. But the book I read was UCXM and I like how Kitty is handling things in light of all that has happened to mutants in the ultimateverse. Seeing how well this book was going I decided to give the Ultimates a chance and this I was simply blown away at the scope and scale of the story and how everything went from 0-1000000 mph in just the first few issues. I like the way that most of the characters were handled very well. My favorite characters of this series are Thor and Nick Fury, they are bad ass. However the best series of this line in my opinion is Ultimate Comics Spider-Man. This series makes you feel for young Miles and his newly turned upside down life. I also love how you can still feel how the city's sadness about the death of Peter Parker, and then how full of joy they are to see the new spider-man in action. Hands down my favorite of the three books. So what are you guys thoughts about this Ultimate Comics Line from Marvel?

Ultimatum was poorly handled...Jeph Loeb should have never been given any writing duties in the Ultimate Universe...but Ultimatum was kind of necessary...with all of the big characters who were killed off it set the Ultimate Universe apart from the 616 and really made it feel different

Well, like you, I was very apprehensive to read the Ultimate Comics, at first (back in 2003), when so many things were up in the air. I mean, in the first appearance of Ultimate Dr. Doom, he was a goat/man. He is my favorite villain, and i almost couldn't take that. Then, I wasnt sure about how they made Wolverine dance on the line of good and evil a lot more than in previous story arcs. Leaving Cyclops to die (even though he didnt) over Jean, i thought, was a little too much. But, that being said, it all grew on me very quickly. I love the artwork, as you say. I thought they made Colossus look amazing. I always liked the striations in his organic metal skin, but seeing him without the lines makes him look more durable. I also like how the story lines are all very linear, in that there are a lot of crossovers (i.e. Kitty and Peter, Wolverine and Cap, etc).

Though i completely detest what they did with the first Ultimate version of Doom, everything else has been a lot of fun to read. Well, except for Ultimate Galactus, that kinda sucked. But, i really enjoyed getting to know the FF in their youth. Their characters are more vibrant and it seems as if the writers have a lot of fun with the relationship development.

I think the Ultimate line is great now. I can tell that Marvel cares about these stories, and that makes them all the more fun to read.

PS. Captain America is much more brutal and crazy in the Ultimates. When Wolverine confronts Cap during a mission, instead of fighting him, he just blasts him with a flamethrower, and walks away saying, "Sorry Logan, no time to play" LOL. that was great! But Cap should never have been able to knock out Gray Hulk, that was a little out of hi league, no matter how BA he is!

@nerdork: i was talking about the new ultimate comics line however you were right everything that came before has played a hand at how great those comics are now. and i do understand what you are saying about Ultimate Dr. Doom, he is the character that has been changed the most since his introduction in the ultimate universe. and yeah there is no way that Captain America could take out the gray Hulk out that is just insane but was cool to see.

@danhimself: yeah it was very poorly handled, and yes it was necessary for the ultimate universe to be so awesome now. even tho two of my favorite characters are now dead in that universe (spider-man and cyclops)

ultimate marvel is (sadly) completely irrelevant now

almost everything from it has migrated across to the main universe

there no long is any purpose to the ultimate line.

we have black fury, hawkspy, cap with guns, punisher joining a team............considering with the exception of spider-man none of the books are particular high sellers, i honestly wouldnt expect ultimate marvel to still be a thing in a year's time.

Ultimate Marvel has been the better Marvel since it was created but the recent movies and comic books we have from Marvel it looks like the main universe is starting to look like the Ultimate one.

all three of the Ultimate books are in the top 100 every month...saying that the line has become irrelevant leads me to believe that you don't read the Ultimate books and you're just making assumptions based on solicits

@danhimself: The top 100. Not the top 10, not even the top 50. Plenty of books that make the Top 100 have been cancelled.
