I know Marvel like to make comic books in reverse by changing what happens in them to fit with the films instead of the other way round but not only have they brought a black Nick Fury in to the 616 and changed Hawkeyes costume to fit with the film, it looks like they will be dissolving the Winter Solider/Black Widow relationship and replacing it with a Hawkeye/Black Widow one now

Yea they'v said in interviews that it was specifically an attempt at bringing an Ultimate Fury in to the 6161, now all we have to wait on is the killing off of Nick (it will happen, it's the reason the Infinity Formula is now gone) and his son taking over from him

So Fury has a black son who's basically Ultimate Nick in the 616 universe and the brilliant Black Widow-Winter Soldier relationship in the excellent Winter Soldier series is being torn apart by Bendis in favour of reigniting the past Black Widow-Hawkeye relationship so that it makes more sense to movie goers turned comic book readers. This is a stupid move by Marvel. @JediXMan said:

@JediXMan: Ah yes you're more of a DC fan I hear? Well I'd guess a Star Wars fan as well given your name and impressive Star Wars knowledge on the site. Personally, I do like Marvel as they do have diamonds within the rough at the moment like Amazing Spider-Man (which I'm reading), Remander's 3 books, Daredevil, Brubaker's Captain America and Bucky series as well as the Winter Soldier series and Jason Aaron's Hulk. However, they can't do big events right nowadays and as you said they do pander to new readers far too easily. DC do as well but they've been more successful, financially for certain. But I prefer DC to Marvel myself.

As far as I'm aware, I never considered Avengers Assemble canon. It's just a way for Marvel to cash in on the movie, nothing more. But even if it were, to break up a relationship between two characters who have so much history together and who both compliment each other so well, I can't see why Marvel would think ruin that relationship would gain new readers. Not to mention that I can't understand how Ed Brubaker, who has spent most of his run on Captain America building the relationship between Bucky and Natasha over the years, to simply sit back and be happy with Marvel destroying all of that.

Hopefully the Avengers Assemble cover is just to get peoples attention and make them buy the book. Either way though, if people don't like the idea I'd suggest not buying the issue at all because that would only make Marvel think we support this idea.

I think the secret relationship will be Venom and Valkyrie after what happened in Venom 15. I don't think Remender would force Hawkeye and Black Widow together considering they both have their respective romances. Bendis created the romance between Hawkeye and Spiderwoman, so hopefully he wouldn't mess that up.

I agree with this. None of what is happening in Avengers Assemble is canon to me and never will be. And Ed Brubaker would not just dissolve a relationship he worked so hard on over the years. But no matter what happens I will support the Winter Soldier series because it is one of the best series out right now.

Couldn't the whole relationship thing in the image be explained by the Ultimate Nullifier creating an AU? Not trying to annoy or slam established readers - God knows I was irritated beyond belief at what happed the GI Joe in movie form, and that's my primary fan comic - but I always shied away from any of the Avengers titles because it's such a huge universe to wrap one's mind around, and a significant investment of cash to get caught up on past story arcs. Now that I've seen the movie, my interest is piqued - so yes, it's a lot more appealing to try to segway into the series via the relatively new AA title. I hate to think that core fans are angry about the whole movie/ canon disparities... at least IDW didn't do any of that nonsense with the Joe titles... but isn't adding new readership a plus, in a market where diminishing sales can kill a title? Please don't assume that new fans are ignorant of comics canon, and will be unwilling to shift loyalties if the stories are rich and dynamic - many of us are established readers of other titles who just need an "in" point that won't break the budget, as our loyalties in terms of budget are committed to other titles. We need something to hook us, to make us see that the comics Avengers universe is just as impressive as what we've seen in the movies, and we're in.

Yes, I liked the Hawkeye/ Black Widow dynamic in the movie - because they DIDN'T rely on liplock to show that the characters cared for one another, whether as friends or more; when I read online that she was with some guy named Bucky in the comics universe, I did roll my eyes and thought, "BUCKY? Seriously? I wouldn't name my DOG 'Bucky!" Sounded like a twelve year old kid, and "Winter Soldier" sounded like something out of my old Dungeons and Dragons days that you'd have to roll against to avoid getting frozen solid. But a friend sent me a few issues of Winter Soldier, and I went, OHHHH - okay, now, THAT is cool. I can deal with this guy.

My point is... don't assume that the movie contingent is entirely made up of squealing teens who can't concieve of a richer plotline. Some of us are long-term readers who just needed a reason to be interested in this franchise.

I thought that "Avengers" series wasn't canon. I mean the Hulk is in there and he's dumb, but we all know he's as smart as a 7th grader now and is the Green Scar persona.

Lastly, covers have been misleading for the longest time.

If this is true, I feel so sorry for Ed Brubaker right now, the poor guy spent years building up this wonderful relationship between Winter Solider and Black Widow and a bunch of greedy corporate whores come and just throw it out the window. This sucks. :(

@Barnes: I completely agree with what you're saying (although I don't think Marvel are going this route, covers are notoriously misleading), but please watch the language.

@Mercy_: Yea nothings and I doubt Brubaker would let anything bad hapen. Also their relationship is a big part of winter soldier so to not have them together is to pretty much not have black widow at all. So itll work out in the end .

It's from Avengers Assemble. The entire comic is bull. I ignore everything that happens there.

F@#K you Marvel, this is bullsh*t.

Precisely. Now, can this baloney be attributed to Quesada no longer being Editor in Chief? I don't know, just throwing it out there?

And I kind of figured strange stuff was going to happen when Disney bought Marvel. Disney is huge, they want to make big bucks because that's all they know how to do. As long as the action figures are selling and the movies are making gazillions of dollars, they don't care how bad the comic book continuity gets raked over the coals. Tomorrow, Disney could say, "Gee, let's introduce the Winter Soldier to Rapunzel and let Thor have kids with Cinderella. Let's replace Jarvis with Mickey Mouse.

In an attempt to be fair, DC is owned by Time Warner, specifically the Warner Bros. publishing arm.

As a comics reader, I'd rather have a publisher own what I'm reading instead of a gigantic money-machine like Disney. Once again, this is only an opinion.

Obviously you don't pay much attention to the characters themselves. When Black Widow first debut in the Marvel universe and moved from Russia to the US, part of the reason she moved was because of Hawkeye. He even helped her try to take down Iron Man. They were a thing long before Bucky even came into the picture. So everyone, calm your tits. Clintasha is endgame!
