As far as the teams go, I would have to agree with Mael by saying Avengers, Fantastic Four, and the X-men. I think it's these three because all 3 groups fight for one particular aspect of the Marvel Universe and are known for fighting for that aspect due to the character's involved.
The X-Men constantly fight for the rights of mutants, and for equality. They are constantly under the attack of a prejudice society that treats them unfairly and like disgusting animals, when they really shouldn't. This was the same issue that that african americans, hispanics, indians, and people of oriental descent had to deal with so the X-Men can represent all of them. That's why they're so easy to relate to and so popular because everybody has gone through something similar.
The Fantastic Four can represent the never ending battle for Science, exploration, and knowlege because in the FF'rs books, they are usually discovering something. The Fantastic Four are so popular because they are literally "the first family", they revolutionized comics, and opened up for Marvel and are responsible for other cash cows, like X-Men and Spider-Man.
The Avengers fight for the defence of the weak. they are constantly against some foe with incredible levels of power to save the Earth, to save the people from something they can't fight. The Avengers also represent unity because here you have a group of people that have nothing in common, that come from different backrounds, and come together, and become friends, then family. They are an incredible team that really do define the term "Super Team".
