Poll: Is DC more overpowered than Marvel? (238 votes)

Yes 50%
No 50%

I think that some of the DC heroes like superman are way more overpowered than most of our Marvel heroes

#51 Posted by Fifthchild (588 posts) - - Show Bio

No. Superman isnt more overpowered than Marvel big guns.

Marvel has prob traditionally had more prominent mid tier characters whereas DC has tended towards characters beings more "Batman-level or Superman-level".

Marvel's big guns havent traditionally been as prominent/popular within their universe - for many years their two biggest franchises were Spider-man and the X-Men while guys like Thor and Hulk only had a single book each and the Surfer couldnt even stay maintain a regular series.

@i_like_swords: Everyone has their own taste and the funny thing is.... The exact reason you like Marvel and not DC is the exact reason I like DC. I like the Superhuman aspect of tadada... "Here I am to save the day" lol And as for Marvel characters.... Thor is one of my favorites, and I guess it is b/c he resembles a DC type of character.

In case of earth bound heroes "YES" DC tends to show that they have more over-powered characters. It's kinda a mistake really in their part for doing that. They may have the tendency to bore readers and have a hard time fitting the stories with the characters. They just don't learn.

#54 Edited by Bezza (3401 posts) - - Show Bio

I think yes, if you talk about the popular characters and not the likes of Sentry and Galactus etc. On the marvel side only Hulk of their major characters has really amazing strength feats. In DC only last week I read of Orion lifting an aircraft carrier, in League of One, Wonder Woman moves an oil tanker that has run aground...Superman has lifted everything from islands to planets during his time....

Well every time someone makes a Marvel vs DC or Avengers vs Justice League, DC side always ends up winning.

#56 Posted by CharlieJade (422 posts) - - Show Bio

Silverage DC was deus ex machina power but not anymore, Marvel now has Surfer, Xman, the Witch etc who regularly achieve PIS level feats

#57 Posted by Nerdjoeyyy (24 posts) - - Show Bio

Marvels OP characters are just less known then Supes and Flash to the main stream fans.

#58 Edited by Nerdjoeyyy (24 posts) - - Show Bio

Silver surfer, Apocalypse, Thor, beyonder, Kronos, Master Order, Lord chaos, Captain Marvel, Impossible man, mistress love, Pheonix force, Gladiator, Beta ray bill, Tyrant, Inbetweener, Eternity, onslaught, Living Tribunal, Mephisto, dormamuu, Magus, Infinity, Thanos.

These are just some cosmic mother effers from Marvel. They can pretty much do anything.

#59 Posted by likeabossbro69 (21 posts) - - Show Bio

superman can lift the earth with one hand his heat vision can melt alaska his freeze vision can freeze the sun and he can blow away the universe..... yeah dc's not overpowered (sarcasim)

@i_like_swords: Talk about lack of knowledge, that was the golden age smart ass, superman has been nerfed in every reboot so far, silver age, SO MUCH NERF, bronze age nerfed, and new 52 supes is no where near his old self. And besides you talk like marvel does not have strong characters? Just look at the superman rip of ( sentry ), or one of there most powerful characters silver surfer, thor & shit ton of hulks. And there villainst are insane, i mean galactus? Jesus...

#63 Posted by Dayvid3 (807 posts) - - Show Bio

Maybe marvel has more mid-tier level? Above street level and below ww, supes

#64 Posted by Perethorn (3212 posts) - - Show Bio

I say No.

Yes, DC has OP characters like Wally.

But Marvel has 2 characters called TOAA and Pre Retcon Beyonder. Both are in Presence´s league.

#65 Posted by NICK31898 (2088 posts) - - Show Bio

Too bad, a lot of marvel's powerhouses, could take D.c.'s powerhouses.

#66 Posted by AssertingValor (5382 posts) - - Show Bio

The question insinuates both are overpowered. Relative to what?

And i think both are fine if they were identical it would be boring.

#67 Posted by AssertingValor (5382 posts) - - Show Bio

@jnr6lil: DC has telepaths such as despero that would probably stop Pro X and Jean Grey (without phoenix), but idk how Despero vs Nate Grey would go.

Few DC telepaths to check out:

• Despero

• Martian Manhunter

• Manchester Black

• Gorilla Grodd

• Psimon

• Saturn Girl

• Mento

• Dr Psycho

• Hector Hammond

Seeing as though full-power Anti-Monitor > full-power Galactus, I'd say yes

So you are saying that Green lantern, is more powerful than hulk, or batman is more powerful that Thor, or any of the popular Marvel charactars?

@gungunw said:

I tend to agree. As long as their good guys and bad guys are at the same power levels who cares? It would be OP if say Superman only fought street level bank robbers, and no Darkseid types. They still have to stuggle

#72 Posted by tigerkaya (1262 posts) - - Show Bio

In earth heroes yes DC does win but in cosmic and inter dimensional godlike beings like Galactus, Living Tribunal and Shuma Gorath they dwarfe DC's earth heroes.

#73 Edited by Spideysense44 (3020 posts) - - Show Bio

god i dnt understand why ppl just cant agree.. i mean marvel and dc are abt the same, both are great, quit trying to shoot dwn one another now as for things like vertigo they sck :p

Knowing how a lot of people on CV say that Marvel's omni/multi/universal characters outclass DC's omni/multi/universal characters, I don't think DC is OP. Marvel has Thor, Hulk, Dr. Strange, Thanos, Silver Surfer, Phoenix, Galactus, Void/Sentry, Scarlet Witch, etc. Heck, they even have Squirrel Girl. It's just that the majority of JL are stronger than the Avengers or X-Men. Like comparing Flash to Quicksilver.

superman can lift the earth with one hand his heat vision can melt alaska his freeze vision can freeze the sun and he can blow away the universe..... yeah dc's not overpowered (sarcasim)

Silver surfur can travel at light speeds, create worm holes, detect life light years away, shoot cosmic energy, control matter(move through it)......a little more poweerful than superman i'd say.

#76 Posted by Black Lantern Mar-vell (2032 posts) - - Show Bio

No because Marvel has guys like Hyperion, Gladiator, Blue Marvel, & Sentry. So they BOTH have some heavy hitters.

DC's Earth lvl heroes are more powerful. Marvel barely has any earth heroes that are super powerful, apart from Thor or sentry, which is why people think DC has more powerful superheroes, but they forget about Drax, Silver Surfer, Hyperion, Beta Ray Bill, Runner, Thanos, Nova and many more. So both universes are equally powerful, its just that marvel displays it's powerhouses differently and consistently downplays their powerhouses who reside on Earth.

#79 Edited by Perethorn (3212 posts) - - Show Bio

If we rule out characters like Wally West or SA Superman, then no, DC is not more OP

#80 Posted by MaccyD (3567 posts) - - Show Bio

How can DC characters be considered OP if that's the standard?

#81 Posted by kgb725 (6021 posts) - - Show Bio

No Marvel's top guys smash Dc's

#82 Posted by HillbillyMorangie (927 posts) - - Show Bio

@gungunw: I said no for the same reason, DCs popular characters are more over powered then Marvels, but Marvel has more over powered characters then DC... marvel is full of gods, Zeus is more over powered then any DC character for a start, Franklin Richards and the rest here it's on comic vine http://www.comicvine.com/profile/godzilla07/lists/top-65-strongest-marvel-characters/40294

#83 Edited by tigerkaya (1262 posts) - - Show Bio

While Marvel lacks the ultra powered bricks that DC shows off Marvel does have other all powerful heroes of earth Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Magneto, Franklin Richard, and X-Man.

#84 Posted by ImagineMan16 (466 posts) - - Show Bio

There's no such thing as an "overpowered" character.

#85 Posted by HillbillyMorangie (927 posts) - - Show Bio

Who is faster? DCs Flash or Marvels Hermes ( Thor #129), the answer is Hermes hehe, ok Marvel just stole another character from Greek Mythology but still, DC and Marvel can both be overpowered when they want to be.

and This, but on the other hand DC has more OVERRATED Superheroes, that's it, there not all that powerful like nerdjoy said, there just over-hyped with feats that are blown way out of proportion as well as the blind fanboys, so no they don't have more powerful characters, they have more overrated ones

#87 Posted by ChildoftheAtom (488 posts) - - Show Bio

I hope marvel brings their superhero teams and solos back down( or up) to superhero levels. This is like around Spider-Man levels( powerful but still has to risk his life to protect) and this is shown to be more entertaining since all movies and cartoons put hero teams on good powerlevels where everyone is useful. Dc is kinda broken and they throw around the invulnerability power too much. I still like the characters it's just kinda lame that they even fight together even on planetary threats ( which all stories no matter how small have to be, which isn't that bad of a thing but still) since some of them don't even have risk of injury and can wait for the villain to die of old age. Even Thor has "super durability " so he can still fight like a warrior not a tank.

About the term overpowered. It's not outclassing ur opponents since most writers can make fearsome villains it's making everyone around u obsolete that's the problem. Silver surfur is not over powered because he is hardly on earth to make daredevil or iron man look useless. When superman takes a missile to the chest and doesn't get hurt it's like "the rest of u guys stay back no sense in anyone risking life and limb when I'm here. Or the flash. Or Martian manhunter can shut them down. How bout give the rest of the guys healing factors. Aquaman get some telepathy. Are we ready to go fight? I wait they fell asleep in the tanks that did nothing to us. We are so heroic to come over here and risk our lives for the tiny humans. "

That's an exaggeration and I understand dc has great writers on there side it's just the reason why the justice league movie sounds kinda silly to me.

That's not to say the hulk or that superman clone Hyperion are not overpowered but that can change from writer. It's just that dc has a reputation for having gods as heroes that always hold back and use 1/10 of their speed and strength.

I think it really depends, after all Marvel characters were created originally to more human responses to likes of Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and yes, even Batman at some point.

@stormbox: maybe I was too plain in what I said. I meant more along the lines of can draw blood or have a broken arm easily. Can be hurt by gunfire. Not just have their stamina depleted. I understand all of that probably happens to them a lot but probably under quite extreme circumstances, no? Doesn't appeal to me personally

Uh.....This is why you don't make generalizations if you've never picked up a DC comic.

@zeeguy91: Are you aware that you just replied to a comment from over 11 months ago? Ever think my views might have changed since then? I had been on the site less than a month when I wrote that and I don't really have an opinion on the topic anymore.

What I think I meant back then was that I like Street-level characters, and while both publishers have powerhouses, most of DC's main characters are powerhouses, which I find unappealing. Just personal preference.

How can you say that DC is more OP than Marvel when you're got people like Hulk, Thor, Dr Strange, Silver Surfer, Scarlet Witch, Galactus, Loki, Thanos, Ghost Rider, Frosty the Fireman etc... same as DC has Superman, Martian Manhunter, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Doomsday, Darkseid, Bizarro etc.

Both universes have their really powerful characters and less powerful characters. But DC isn't more OP than Marvel, no...

#93 Edited by leonkarlen123 (3948 posts) - - Show Bio

Some are. Starheart>>Everything in Marvel. Full Spectre power>Everything in marvel.

They are basically OMniverse busters

#94 Posted by Bezza (3401 posts) - - Show Bio

..I think the Justice League characters are probably more OP'd than say, the classic Avengers line up seen in the Avengers movies, or the X Men...Martian Manhunter, Superman, Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Shazam...all absolute power houses...most of the DC powerhouses have flight and mega fast combat speed too...

However, Marvel also have Silver Surfer, Thor, Hulk, Hyperion, Black Bolt, Sentry and of course big bad Thanos, who could probably solo any of the DC heroes.....

overall its as close as the 51/49 current poll standings suggest...

in no way possible is DC more overpowered then Marvel.

This idea has died about a decade or two ago. The amount of galaxy busters, super geniuses and reality destroyers is staggering in both companies.

the difference between the two companies is that the best of DC are the most famous. While Marvel's popularity ranges between their galaxy busters and the elite of street levelers.

there use to be another difference that Marvel characters would say they can't until they ultimately could. This stopped of course too.

No, Dc Fans and Writers love to overpower their characters. Mostly the fans make the characters op

#98 Edited by Jayc1324 (9811 posts) - - Show Bio

Most definitely. Just look at flash and quicksilver.

#99 Posted by Enigma1179 (4 posts) - - Show Bio

well to start red viper you cannot count silver surfer galactus or thanos because they are all cosmic powered and if you want to add in cosmic powered then the debate just ends in a stalemate because both have there versions of omnipresent and omnipotent beings. yet if you are to take the argument anywhere below that dc completly owns marvel so no matter what it ends as a stalemate or dc winning.

#100 Posted by name_already_chosen (175 posts) - - Show Bio

The question was not whether DC has more powerful characters than has Marvel but whether DC characters are overpowered.

So the answer is obviously "no". DC characters are no more powerful for their universe than Marvel characters are for their universe -- actually, they are less.

Marvel's superheroes Thor and The Hulk can routinely knock out their universe's mythic gods, Reed & Sue's five-year old son Reed Richards once killed evil itself (briefly), and The Scarlet Witch rewrote reality. Neither Superman nor Wonder Woman has been able to knock out Ares or any other mythic god, no one in the DC universe is capable of killing evil itself, and no DC hero ever successfully rewrote reality unless unintentional mucking about with time machines counts. Thor and The Hulk are more powerful for their universes than Superman and Wonder Woman are for theirs.
