Lately, with Marvel Now here and around the corner, I have seen an increase in what appears to be a clean up of characters that Marvel seem to feel are no longer needed.

To help answer this I looked for a list that someone might have put together of those that died. It was quite a long list so I shortened it by only including those that died 2010 to present. I also list those I find of particular interest and of significance, at least to me.

Uh, probably not. X-23 has marketability and a fanbase. As for the rest of the main cast of the Academy, I think maybe one or two might kick it, but where you would draw the conclusion that they're ALL GOING TO DIE OMFG EFF YOU MARVEL is kind of beyond me.

Leaving that huge and baseless assumption aside, even if a few of them did end up dying, most people probably wouldn't care. Avengers Academy never really had a massive following. I really haven't heard or seen too many fans get up in arms about the book being canceled post-AvX. It was a decent book while it lasted, but Marvel realized that, given the price of comics these days, most fans want to read about name characters that actually have a substantial impact on the MU, as opposed to some tangential new-ish characters that never really latched on to the readership.

Occasionally, Marvel will come up with a decent new character with stayability (the aformentioned X-23, Jessica Jones, Gravity, Sentry, etc.) but when they come up with new heroes that don't "stick" well, they maximize their value by killing them and using those deaths to sell the idea that there are actual dangers and potentially fatal consequences for heroes in the MU. Which I am fine with.

I dug Academy...solid writing, decent art for the most part, likable characters. But I'm not going to shed a tear or tear Marvel to shreds if Reptil takes the fall during the course of a decently-told story. Something like that happening lends weight to whatever threat the heroes of the story are facing and gives credibility and a sense of evil and danger to the villain.

I while ago I started this topic, because I have seen a number of characters being killed off in the move to Marvel Now, the latest being Dr Ashley Kafka killed by Massacre in order to take one of her eyes to get past a retinal scanner, in Superior Spider-Man #4

So I decided to see if I could put together a list of those killed between 2010 and now, fortunately I found a list has already been put together and I have placed it in the initial post of this topic. I also included the link of where I acquired it as it's much larger than what I have placed above.

If you know of any that have been missed from 2010 to now, let me know with Who, Which issue & How and I will add it.

@animehunter: There are definitely some names in there that are much older than 2010, at least based on when the chart says they died. Also, Darkhawk has not been confirmed dead, though the amulet was taken and he was very much injured. (He may be dead, but that's not guaranteed).

This is rather ridiculously stupid. Not you, but just this line of thought. People really see merit in "actual danger?" Then let's put a bunch of A-listers in a deathmatch. Otherwise you prove nothing at all about risk in the Marvel Universe, because survival remains status quo for big names. If the only heroes that can actually die are the orphans and the unpopular kids, then that says nothing about the dangers of the universe -- only the dangers of editorial and Wall Street.

So like I said, stupid. Stupid that Marvel thinks killing unpopular characters will convince people that real danger exists for popular ones. Stupider still that anyone buys into it.
