Marv

Marv is a comic book character that first appeared in Dark Horse Presents #51

Marv is hulking, tough and has an infamous reputation in Basin city. His physical features hide a tender heart, and after the only woman he ever loved is murdered, Marv swears to avenge her.

Marv grew up with his mom and went to a catholic school. There are not references about his father. At school he met Gladys, in his own words "the toughest nun in school". He named his M1911 Pistol after her. Marv has been to prison several times, and according to his parole officer Lucille, it was "hell for him". Marv has a condition, and therefore needs medication, which is often kept by  Lucille. Marv is good friends with Dwight McCarthy, and that has to do with the fact that Manute has only one eye.

One night, in a bar, Marv met a woman. She came on to him and gave him the night of his life. She has blond hair so Marv refers to her as an angel and as a goddess. She told him that her name is Goldie. When Marv woke up the next morning, Goldie was murdered, without a mark on her. He vowed revenge, and set out to find out who killed her.

Police are already on the way to arrest Marv, who realises he's been set up. Since there is no time to hide and he knows that they want him dead, he decides that there is no point in playing good or quiet so he just plays it his way. Smashing through the motel room door, he manages to evade the police, jumping through a window and landing on some trash in an alley. Marv then comandeers a police car by smashing through the windscreen. He then drives it into the ocean, and swims into a sewer pipe until he resurfaces in another alley. Needing medication, he goes to see Lucille.

After explaining to Lucille what has happened to him, Marv visits his blind mother's house to pick up his gun, Gladys, which he had once stole from someone who killed. Marv's mother tells him there were people asking after him, and that they weren't police. Marv tells her he got a new job, working the night shift. In this point it's obvious that he cares enough for his mother to hide the truth so she can be safe.

Marv then heads to Kadie's Club Pecos, looking for Weevil. After incapacitating the new bouncer, Marv heads inside, where he sees Nancy Callahan dancing onstage. Locating Weevil, Marv tells him to spread the word that he has been hitting the bars, crying his ass off over some hot babe, name of Goldie. Marv lets Weevil go, then orders a shot and a brew from the barmaid, Shellie.

Two hitmen walk in and put a gun to Marv's back. One tells him "Show's over, dickwad. Drink up". They go out back in the alley, and Marv pretends to trip, grabbing one of the hitmen's guns and shooting the other. Marv kills one by repeatedly slamming his head into the wall. He tells the other to take off his coat, as it's a quality coat and he's bleeding all over it. The hitman begs Marv not to kill him, but Marv tells him he already killed him, and he can either make it quick or he can make it long and slow and painful. The hitman tells Marv what he knows, and Marv shoots him in the head. He kills his way to the truth, torturing people until they give him someone elses name. He enjoys the whole thing. Eventually, Marv winds up talking to a priest in the confession box. When Marv asks for a name, the priest tells him that Roark was behind it. Marv doesn't believe him, stating "it can't be that big", since Roarks are a strong family in Basic City. The priest tells him about the Roark family farm, telling him to go out there and while he's at it, to "think about whether that corpse of a slut is worth dying for". Marv kills him for this, and takes the keys to his car.

When he gets outside, Marv is assualted by a woman, who appears to be Goldie, in a car, who hits him several times and shoots at him before driving away.

Blaming his confusion entirely on not taking his medication for a while, Marv drives out to the Roark family farm.

By the time Marv reaches the farm, a dog attacks him so he had to knock him out. Out of nowhere he gets attacked from behind. He can't believe that he got attacked like that since no one can sneak up on him. The killer blinds him for a little bit then knocks Marv out with a sledge hammer. Marv wakes up in a cold basement where there are female heads on the wall. But he is not alone, Lucille is also there. She is in shock and tells him that "He keeps the heads, he eats the rest!!". Then Marv looks outside through some bars. A car pulls up and someone from it calls Kevin to get in. Marv keeps the name and breaks out of there. When police arrive, Marv and Lucile are in the forest hiding. Marv cocks his gun but Lucile hits him with a log "Your not going to get us killed Marv". She then walks out and turns him in but gets shot to death. Marv gets a hatchet and kills all the policemen, about 6 of them. The last one alive is the one that killed Lucile, Marv walks up to him and says "Now thats one damn fine looking coat you got there". Then he kills him and takes the coat and walks away.

He goes to a statue of Cardinal Roark and just stands there in the rain, since rain helps him think, trying to figure out what's going on. He makes a sum up, jumping in the conclusion that Goldie knew that someone wanted her dead. So the reason she hit on him was that she was scared. She hitted the salons, the bad places looking for the biggest, meanest lug around so she could be protected; and that she was willing to pay it with her body. He realizes that he might be wrong so he desides to ask around a little before do something really stupid.

A little while he reaches Sin City. That's the new name for Basin City since the hockers rule the old town part. The girls there have their own rules. There he gets hit by a woman who looks a lot like Goldie and he passes out. We wakes up tided on a chair with some chicks in the room. The one who looks like Goldie starts hitting him with the back of her revolver blamming him for Goldies death, among with six others. It turns out to be Goldie's identical twin sister, Wendy. After she and the rest hockers are convinced that Marv isn't the one who did this to the missing girls, they help him to get revenge.

Since Marv is sure that he isn't hallusinating, he needs to do some shopping in equipment before the final act and Wendy is willing to pay the bill. On the way to Roarks farm, Marv checks if he has everything we will need. Rubber tubing, gas, saw, gloves, cliffs, razor wire, hatchet, Gladys and of course his "mitts". They reached the farm and Marv gets ready his trap for Kevin. He manage to make him come out of his hide out. After a while he's got Kevin right where he wants him. Wendy tries to interfere and Marv slaps her. She lost her sences and Marv felt bad because that was the first time he hit a woman. He takes her to the car and returns back to finish what he started. He choped Kevin to death and let the dog to eat the pieces. He cut the head and left.

Trying not to waste time, he dropped Wendy back at Nancy's place and headed to Cardinal Roark house. He easily passed the guards and found his way to Roarks room. He delivers him Kevin's head and Roark fills Marv's missing story parts. Marv kills him in a slow and painful way. In own Marv's words, as an answer to Roarks question if killing him will satisfy Marv, "The killing no. No satisfaction. But everything up until the killing will be a gas". Roark's security broke in, since they've been alerted from Cardinal's screams, and empty their clips on Marv. Marv survived and found himself hospitalised.

Several months passed by and he was back on his feet. But that didn't last for long. They accussed him for everything. Not only for the people he killed but also for the girls Kevin and Roark ate. Even Goldie. They had already written a confession and demanded Marv to sign it. He kept spitting on the copies they brought. The only thing that could make him change his mind was his mom. When they treated about her life, he broke the guy's, the attorney that brought the papers, arm and signed.

The trial was a show, a circus that everyone would like to be. Marv gets the hot seat penalty. Right before his last meal and a few hours away from his death, a visitor comes. It's Wendy, that came to thank him for everything.

The guards wire Marv up to electric chair, and he tells them to get on with it, he doesnt have all night.

They throw the switch.

"That the best you can do you pansies?"

They hit it again, but Marv dies laughing.
