Get ready for some cool news. IDW Publishing and DC Entertainment have announced the meeting between two of my favorite pulp heroes, the Rocketeer and the Spirit. I like the Spirit so much I have still not been able to bring myself to watch the movie.

The four-issue series begins in July and will be written by Mark Waid with art by Paul Smith!

THE ROCKETEER/THE SPIRIT: PULP FRICTION will contain both a murder mystery and political intrigue. The story will take place in the Spirit's gritty Central City as well as the sunny skies of Los Angeles. There will be plenty of action and humor in the series.

Here's what Mark Waid had to say:

Not many writers have been lucky enough to write The Rocketeer or The Spirit, so I feel like I’ve won the lottery. This is one of the most exciting—and scariest—assignments I’ve ever undertaken. Luckily, I’ve got Paul Smith to make me look good!

The fun begins on July 10. Make sure to let you comic shop know you're interested in the series.

Good call avoiding the Spirit movie if you're a fan of the character. What a mess. Catwoman and Elektra are always brought up in any discussion of "worst comic book movie," but The Spirit was easily just as bad, if not worse. (Let that sink in--worse than Catwoman.)

Waid doesn't hate DC. He just hates Dan Didio and/or the current editorial regime of DC, which is too bad. I love Waid's work and would kill to see him take over Action Comics with the recent disappointment of Andy Diggle leaving.

DC no longer holds the rights to The Spirit, Doc Savage or T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents.

The Spirit is a public domain character now last I heard, so DC CAN publish stuff with him, but so can other companies if they want

You had me at Paul Smith.

Seriously, though, it's really great to see Dave Stevens' Rocketeer continuing to make waves in the industry. It's a great character, deserving of all the recognition and exposure it can get.

Its crazy to me how an indie character like the rocketeer has become so recognizable and is considered a pulp character even though he was created in the early 80s. Im not saying any of this is a bad thing because i really like the character but its just such a rare thing for a small company to publish an iconic character

A DC/IDW crossover?! Awesome! I'll have to check this out..the fact that Waid is part of it just adds to the urgency to try this out.
