Mark Millar’s been hinting about a new creator-owned “Millarworld” project at Icon for quite some time, now. All we’ve known up until this point is that it’s another superhero story, Leinil Francis Yu is drawing it and Millar’s already been talking to Matthew Vaughn about directing a big screen adaptation of it, just like he did with KICK-ASS. Other than that, we haven’t seen neither hide nor hare regarding it. Now, we’ve come across a print ad campaign at Bleeding Cool (by way of CBR) which is effectively a preview of the preview feature that’s going to run in the Wizard issue Millar's guest-editing later this month.
I’ve always got to tip my hat to Millar. The man knows how to promote.
But what about the previews themselves? What do they reveal about this project, which we now know to be titled SUPERIOR? I’ll agree that it clearly seems to be about a superhero who’s going to use his awesome powers to finally solve some major global problems and shape the fate of the world - - a theme that’s been explored in the likes of MIRACLE MAN, THE AUTHORITY and even in the DCU with that JLA: SUPERPOWER special from a few years back. I can’t help feeling an undercurrent of menace to these previews, what with the black backdrops and blood red words and all. Seeing as how WANTED, KICK-ASS and NEMESIS have all explored the darker sides of the superhero paradigm, I wouldn’t be surprised to see SUPERIOR doing something similar. Perhaps this story’s world is ruled by a super-being whose ideals of right and wrong aren’t in line with those he imposes them on? Who knows?

Anyway, here are the previews...
