Mark Millar & Leinil Yu's New Superhero Comic is SUPERIOR

Posted by No_name_here (1225 posts) - - Show Bio

Mark Millar’s been hinting about a new creator-owned “Millarworld” project at Icon for quite some time, now. All we’ve known up until this point is that it’s another superhero story, Leinil Francis Yu is drawing it and Millar’s already been talking to Matthew Vaughn about directing a big screen adaptation of it, just like he did with KICK-ASS. Other than that, we haven’t seen  neither hide nor hare regarding it. Now, we’ve come across a print ad campaign at Bleeding Cool (by way of CBR) which is effectively a preview of the preview feature that’s going to run in the Wizard issue Millar's guest-editing later this month.

I’ve always got to tip my hat to Millar. The man knows how to promote.

But what about the previews themselves? What do they reveal about this project, which we now know to be titled SUPERIOR? I’ll agree that it clearly seems to be about a superhero who’s going to use his awesome powers to finally solve some major global problems and shape the fate of the world - - a theme that’s been explored in the likes of MIRACLE MAN, THE AUTHORITY and even in the DCU with that JLA: SUPERPOWER special from a few years back. I can’t help feeling an undercurrent of menace to these previews, what with the black backdrops and blood red words and all. Seeing as how WANTED, KICK-ASS and NEMESIS have all explored the darker sides of the superhero paradigm, I wouldn’t be surprised to see SUPERIOR doing something similar. Perhaps this story’s world is ruled by a super-being whose ideals of right and wrong aren’t in line with those he imposes them on? Who knows?

Anyway, here are the previews...

I’m sure you Comic Vine maniacs have some, dare I say, superior ideas about what SUPERIOR could be out than I have. So let your voices be heard! What do you figure Millar and Yu have in store?

Shouldn't he finish up Nemesis before starting on another series? Unless he's already finished it up and we're waiting on Steve McNiven and the colorist for the other 4 issues.  Although apparently Steve was in the hospital for a while and that's why the delays on Nemesis....which is totally understandable.

Also if you ask me it looks like Nemesis but with Superman instead, basically instead of "what If Batman was the Joker?" this looks like "What if Superman was Lex Luthor?"

Where the hell is Nemesis? I F****** loved Issue 1 then these days I get really paranoid that I've missed the other issues for some reason, they've not come out then?

maybe it will be like tangent superman where he decides that he can solve everthing but ends up becoming a dictator and his people have no real freedom

Wasn't  "Look To The Skies" a tagline for Countdown?

This looks interesting, I will be checking this out, plus my birthday's in October (hint, hint, family members >_>)

Here are some random Ideas that just popped into my head...

  1. Haven't been reading Nemesis, but maybe since that book is about a villain, maybe this book is about Nemesis' literal "nemesis?"
  2. Maybe it's also like Nemesis in the sense that instead of a villain as the main character, it's a hero?

Maybe Miller wants to write a "Superman" who will actaully do something about the worlds problems and explore that whole idea and the ramifications it will entail.....!?!?!

Seems more like a movie rather than a comic book. And it looks kinda creepy.
