She is the self-proclaimed "Sorceress Supreme," of Earth and master of the “Winding Way”. Though her true origins are still unknown, she was allegedly born in Paris and received magic training from her mother. Margali is Nightcrawlers’ foster-mother. Edit
HISTORY
Margali Szardos had been supposedly having an affair with the mystic Azazel, who was having a child with the mutant shape-shifter Mystique. The pain of child birth was too much for the young mutant and caused Mystique to return to her normal form, and she gave birth to a demonic looking child. The locals became enraged, and chased her from the city. She threw the child off a bridge as she fled but the child was later found by Margali, who adopted the boy. Margali had two children of her own Jimaine Szardoz and a son, Stefan.
Margali than raised all three children in a small Bavarian circus, where she pretended to be a gypsy fortune teller. While Kurt worked on becoming a circus acrobat, Margali trained young Jimaine in the ways of magic, however the brooding Stefan eventually left the circus to make his own way in the world. The small circus was bought out by a rich Texas millionaire, who ordered Kurt to be placed in the freak sideshow. The anguished Kurt quit the circus and headed toward Winzeldorf, West Germany, where his foster-brother Stefan lived. There Kurt discovered that Stefan had gone mad and had killed two children.
Two days after leaving the circus Kurt tracked Stefan down and attempted to capture him and bring him into custody. During the fight Kurt accidentally broke Stefan's back thereby killing Margali's only son. The superstitious locals discovered Kurt with Stefan's body, and because of Kurt's demonic appearance they assumed that he had also killed the two children. However Kurt was saved from the mob by the psionic powers of Professor X, who asked Kurt to join his new team of X-Men which he agreed to and went to America with Professor X.
Sometime later Margali's mystic might was powerful enough to summon Dr. Strange's mystical Eye of Agamotto, and Strange couldn't stop her. Using the Soulsword, Margali was able to kill all of the magicians ahead of her on the Way, and gain back her power faster. She also gave herself a new body, and joined the London Hellfire Club as their Red Queen. Making plans with the Black Air operation and the Hellfire Club to release a demon trapped under London into the city, with the resulting chaos allowing them to take over the government. Margali's magic was essential to this plan, as was the mutant hybrid Douglock who was captured and unraveled by Black Air, and used as a techno-organic interface with the demon's crypt. But when Margali tapped into Douglock's head, she was overwhelmed by the power and evil of the demon, and was incapacitated.
When the super-team called Excalibur freed Douglock from the interface and resealed the demon into his chamber, Margali vanished. In that moment of vulnerability, she was captured by the Lord of Limbo Belasco , also the keeper of the Soulsword. Belasco tortured Margali for sometime until Amanda killed all of her old circus friends and with Kurt, ventured to Limbo. In reality, however, Margali had switched bodies with her daughter, so that Amanda's mind was trapped in the body Belasco had, and Margali was free to rescue her. When Belasco was defeated Margali revealed that she had not killed her circus friends, but instead had temporarily removed their souls to complete the ruse. Everyone was restored to their true forms and Margali left Limbo in her daughter's hands.
POWERS AND ABILITIESMargali is the Guardian of the ancient Winding Ways, a mystical path of power that magicians follow, and which grants them periods of great power followed by periods of weakness. Margali is a powerful sorceress, with various spell-casting abilities, including teleportation, shapeshifting, elemental control and so on. While her power is based in black magic, Margali on the whole uses her powers for good.
