Marc Silvestri
Whoa!
When I think back to the 90s, three of the top artists that come to mind are Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane and Marc Silvestri. I remember first seeing Marc's work in the pages of Uncanny X-Men. I was a little bummed when the creation of Image was coming about because I didn't want to see my favorite artists leave my favorite characters.
Marc created the world of Cyberforce. He went on to create other characters such as Witchblade and the Darkness. As the business side of Top Cow took more of Marc's time, to me, he sort of fell out of the limelight. He would still pop up and deliver awesome covers but his work wasn't as in-your-face as some of the other artists whose work was everywhere.
Looking at these glorious 96 pages of work, including penciled sketches reminds me of what I admired before. Marc is without a doubt, a great artist. His characters are gorgeous and he retains his own style. Right away you can recognize his hand when he does a variant cover or promotional sketch.
This collection serves to remind us of the talent he has. Also included are works from early in his career at Marvel and also characters from other companies such as DC and Dynamite Entertainment.
The only downside is it has a thirty dollar price tag. You can't really argue that when you consider it is almost one hundred pages and is hardcover. It is a book that should be included in your library, especially if you've ever admired Silvestri's work.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Marvel has been putting some talent into their What If...? titles lately. They've usually been throwaway stories that didn't really "matter" that much. I loved the original series way back. These stories have been giving us a nice glimpse into what could've happened. I have to admit I am surprised at everyone that they've got working on this one. I just hope the story is good. Too many times the writers have had their What If stories end with major deaths and destruction trying to show us that what actually happened was for the best. I don't want them trying to say that Cap surrendering and eventually getting "killed" was better than what could have happened. We'll find out next month.
The most controversial, most talked about series of 2006 was Civil War, in which the super human community was forever changed—but what if it all turned out differently? That question’s at the heart of the star studded What If? Civil War, exploring two different possible endings to the comic book epic, by writers Ed Brubaker (Captain America, Daredevil), Kevin Grevioux (New Warriors) and Christos Gage (World War Hulk: X-Men). Teamed with artists Mark Djudjevic, Gustavo and Harvey Talibao, this What If is a can’t-miss for Civil War fans—and it’s wrapped up in two covers, one by Marc Silvestri and a wraparound by Djurdjevic! And if those two covers didn’t have your jaws on the floor, wait till you see the special Djurdjevic sketch variant, showcasing the acclaimed artist’s cover work like you’ve never seen before!
Framed by Eisner-winning author Brubaker and acclaimed artist Djurdjevic, two stories take you on unforgettable paths through the possibilities of Civil War. In the first story, by Grevioux and Gustavo, Captain America unites all the heroes against Registration while Henry Gyrich takes the Registration Act into his own hands—with terrifying results! The second story, by Gage and Talibao, explores the consequences of Iron Man losing the war and how it affects the entire Marvel Universe! Democracy is put to the test—and through its paces—in this timely political tale.
“What If? Civil War continues to explore the political issues the original series tackled,” explained Editor Justin F Gabrie. “Both of the stories within are meant to go in completely separate directions, hopefully in ways you wouldn’t expect.”
We’ve all seen what happened to the Marvel Universe in the wake of Captain America’s death—but could that tragedy have been avoided? Could there be a happy ending to the event that tore apart the Marvel Universe? Only one comic has the answers and it’s called What If? Civil War, the extra-sized issue that fulfills your Civil War withdrawal!

Image Creators
Who's going to the San Diego Comicon?
Due to the huge crowd expected for next week's "Image Founders Panel" (moderated by George Khoury), Comicon International: San Diego will be moving it to room 6A. The panel will still be held at the same time (10:30-11:30am, Friday, July 27), just in a much larger room, which will now hold 1,000 people instead of 500. This will be the first time all seven Image partners have ever appeared together on one panel.
Below is the updated blurb from Comicon International: San Diego:
FRIDAY, JULY 27
10:30-11:30 Image Comics: The Founders—Erik Larsen, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri, and Jim Valentino reunite for Image's remarkable 15th anniversary. Join the conversation as they explore Image Comics' beginnings, impact, and future in the comics industry. Moderated by George Khoury (author of Image Comics: The Road to Independence from TwoMorrows Publishing). Room 6A
In 1992, seven artists shook the foundation of the comic book industry when they left their top-selling Marvel Comic titles to jointly form a new company named Image Comics. With no certainty of success, they formed a home that would allow themselves and other artists the opportunity to tell their stories without any censorship or editorial restraints. Even more importantly, Image would finally give creators full ownership of their properties. In an industry that began with artists working in sweatshop-like conditions, Image remains a living beacon for any creator that dares to dream.
Image Comics is a comics and graphic novels publisher formed in
1992 by a collective of best-selling artists. Since that time,
Image has gone on to become one of the largest comics publishers in
the United States. There are currently four partners in Image
Comics (Erik Larsen, Todd McFarlane, Marc Silvestri and Jim
Valentino), and Image is currently divided into four major houses
(Todd McFarlane Productions, Top Cow Productions, Shadowline and
Image Central). Image comics and graphic novels cover nearly every
genre, sub-genre and style imaginable, offering science fiction,
romance, horror, crime fiction, historical fiction, humor and more
by the finest artists and writers working in the medium today.

More Witchblade news. Is it a boy or a girl?
Top Cow Productions is pleased to announce First Born #1 will feature a triple gatefold panoramic cover to kick off the highly anticipated summer event. The cover will be fully painted by series artist Stjepan Sejic (Witchblade, The Darkness Level 1) and feature the forces of Light, Dark, and The Balance caught in the middle along with the supporting players. The first issue will also feature a second cover by Marc Silvestri (Civil War: The Initiative, Hunter-Killer).
Billed as the most important story to ever hit the Top Cow Universe, First Born promised to deliver with major shake ups and big revelations that will change the face of the world in three jam-packed issues. Erupting from the events of the ongoing Witchblade series, writer Ron Marz (Ion, Samurai: Heaven and Earth) finally reveals to fans the secrets behind Sara Pezzini's unexpected pregnancy. Pezzini first realized she was with child in the landmark Witchblade #100, but until now the nature of her pregnancy and the identity of the father have remained a mystery. At the start of First Born #1, Pezzini is on leave from the NYPD and no longer in possession of the mystical Witchblade. Unknown to her, epic events are unfolding around her. Agents of the Angelus are seeking a new host, but first they want mob boss and bearer of The Darkness, Jackie Estacado out of the way… permanently. The cold war between the forces of Light and Dark is heating up and Sara will be caught in the middle. Plus the stunning circumstances surrounding Sara's mysterious conception will be unveiled!
"First Born represents a big payoff for the people who have been following Witchblade, but it also serves as an introduction to the Top Cow universe as a whole. We've set out to make this a satisfying story for faithful readers as well as new readers, and to accomplish that in just three issues," commented writer Ron Marz, "Right now the trend in crossovers is these huge, sprawling events whose sheer scope can serve as a barrier to readers. With First Born, we're telling a story that first and foremost focuses on the characters, and has a beginning, middle and most importantly, an end"
"Stjepan originally sketched out this piece to be split into three separate images for First Born", commented Filip Sablik, Vice President of Marketing & Sales, "When we saw the masterpiece he'd created we decided it we had to go all out with a triple gatefold cover at no extra cost to fans to showcase his beautiful work."
First Born #1 is a 32 page, fully painted three issue limited series with a suggested retail price of $2.99. Additional information regarding First Born can be found at www.topcow.com.
