I said before have you considering the fact that Fishburne got the role because of his acting ability. People tried to do this same thing when Heimdall was cast as a black man, but they quickly shut the hell up when they saw for themselves why he was chosen.I didn't say he was chosen for his acting ability. I said that it wasn't that much of a problem to me because he is a good actor. I think he was chosen for a completely different reason.
Heimdall isn't even as popular as Perry White is, nor was he as pivotal a character as Perry White is. I didn't even know who Heimdal was until someone told me he was being played by a Black actor. At that point, I didn't even care. Idris was chosen because Heimdall is a throw-away character. Whether they made him White, Asian, or Middle-Eastern wouldn't make a difference to me.

But changing the race was pointless and dumb.Exactly.
Now J.Jonah Jameson on the other hand he is recognized by comic book fans and non fans and he has a distinct look and attitude. No comic book readers know who JJJ is and they can recognize his look. With this being said I recant my statement about not caring about his race being changed because considering just how iconic he actually is I wouldn't want that changed.
All the characters descriptions matter no matter the size to me
oh your changing the race of that character?
yeah but but don't worry its not an important character just a side character so its ok
and my opinion is racist because i would rather add then change a character but that isn't
@Caligula: Perry White is not an iconic character lets just go ahead and get this out there. Outside of comic book fans no one even knows who the man is. The difference between Storm and Perry is that Storm is extremely iconic considering not only is she one of the first black comic book characters but she is also recognized by people who aren't comic book fans because of her unique look and character. If Perry was as iconic as Storm and his look recognized by comic book fans and non fans alike then I would probably have some reservations about this casting, but Perry is not an icon to the degree that Storm and T'challa is. Now J.Jonah Jameson on the other hand he is recognized by comic book fans and non fans and he has a distinct look and attitude. No comic book readers know who JJJ is and they can recognize his look. With this being said I recant my statement about not caring about his race being changed because considering just how iconic he actually is I wouldn't want that changed.so now your argument boils down to popularity dictates the ability to change race or gender?
if you want to get technical here, Storm may be more popular, but White is more historic, he has been around a lot longer and has a lot bigger history. And never once was he portrayed as Black.
It's stupid to change the race of a character regardless of popularity.
@Static Shock: Heimdall is a very important character especially more so than Perry White.I disagree with that, considering the fact that Superman has had more face time in entertainment and media than Thor has, outside of comic books. Thus, by extension, exposing Perry White's character to much wider audiences than Heimdall. But, to each his own.
@Static Shock: For white people, it was Evolution. "Hey honey, it's David Duchovny from the X-Files and some funny black guy!"LMAO. Forgot about that movie.
@Caligula: Yes if you make Black Panther white black comic book readers would be outraged (I still would not put it pass a studio because whitewashing happens all the time, see the examples of 21 and Avatar), the reason for the outrage would be 1) he is the most prominent black comic character 2) he is one of the few respectable Black characters (many others are caricatures of stereotypes or very minor). You suggesting Black Panther be white in a movie is like wanting a black Steve Rogers in a movie. (do not bring up isiah bradley because he never has replaced Steve Rogers and that story took elements from real life Tuskegee Syphilis Study)I don't want BP to be white in a film. that's just as f***ing stupid as Perry White being Black.
I don't have a problem with it, since Laurence Fishburne is a good actor. But, Perry has had a pivotal role in the Superman mythos as a White man. Why change it? The Daredevil movie's main mistake (other than casting Ben Affleck as Daredevil) was making Kingpin a Black man.Pivotal? really? I mean Jimmy Olsen is a much more important character to the Superman mythos as he is a device to humanize Superman but I still would not call him pivotal.
Uncle Ben=Pivotal
Batman's parents=Pivotal
Peryy White=exists in superman's world...
I stopped reading when I saw the words darker and edgier. What is it with every superhero movie suddenly having to be darker now? I'm starting to get tired of it already and I know it's only just getting started. This is going to be just like the 3D thing, soon there will hardly be a movie to come out that doesn't take on a darker tone.
@Caligula: I'm saying how iconic the character is not how popular they are. Just because Perry has been around longer doesn't make him more iconic, like I already said outside of comic book readers no one really knows who Perry White is. I wouldn't like it if they tried to make Captain America black or make the Red Skull a different't ethnicity because of how iconic their looks are.so again, you are just repeating your popularity determines the liberties you can take with the race/sex of a character.

Its like no one wants to consider the fact that maybe just maybe Fishburne got the job because.........he could act and may have been the best choice for the role. People are acting as if Zack was just looking for a reason to make Perry White black.

lol.
And honestly, do we have to start talking about a race change for every time a black actor is brought up for a role of a white character? It's a movie and considering the last time a white actor played Perry there isn't really a way the ONE role will have such a huge effect on the movie. Nick Fury isn't black either, but Sam Jackson plays that role just fine.
Wait, you mean this fictius character is not 100% the same as his comic book version? My god the world will end
@Static Shock: As I said before outside of comic book fans no one really know who Perry White is. Just because he is older doesn't make him a more important character than Heimdall. In the Thor comics Heimdall is a pretty importance character that is tasked with a pretty important job.Outside of comic book fans, no one cares about Heimdall, either. But, I'm willing to bet that Perry White is more popular than Heimdall is.
I'm pretty sure fans of Superman: TAS know who Perry is. I'm sure fans of Lois and Clark: The Adventures of Superman know who Perry White is. I'm sure fans of the classic Richard Donner Superman films know who Perry White is. I'm sure fans of Smallville would also recognize Perry White, too. Outside of comic books, what does Heimdall have? The Avengers cartoon that's still relatively new (and even in that, he's has no significance)? The Thor movie? Aight.
Is it really that important? The movie isn't about Perry White, so I don't think it's that big of a deal to get an actor who can play the role who just so happens to be black.well Burton's Batman film wasn't about Harvey Dent. and he was black in that and that doesn't make it any less stupid.
@Chibi-Iroh said:Well, I'm saying it. As I keep reading this conversation it just make me more and more sad. Come guys I really thought we were past this, guess I was being naive.
Unless the fans are okay with comics wont ever be diverse, it is apparent from yesterday and today that most fans are not okay with Diversity.
well Burton's Batman film wasn't about Harvey Dent. and he was black in that and that doesn't make it any less stupid.Yeah, that was stupid. Wasn't he played by Billy Dee Williams? LOL.

ugh, I am all for diversity, but I'm not for throwing away the history of a character.
I'm all for diversity/ I wan't others of different colors, creeds, beliefs, religions, nationalities so on so on. I think it would be GREAT!
You don't have to change a characters race to do that all you have to do is create another character to do it.
whats so hard to understand
why cant they add a character are they lazy, or just plain uncreative/unimaginative
@cascadeking09 said:That movie wasn't stupid that movie was good. One minor role's change in race doesn't affect the entire movie, especially if that actor can pull the role off. As a stated before Ironman far from sucked and Nick Fury is black and Robert Downey jr. is not part hispanic (at least not as far as I know). So this will hardly play a part in how good or bad the movie is.Is it really that important? LF will not ruin this film, I have faith he will be awesome in it in fact. that doesn't make the complete lack of respect for comic history any less pointless, redundant, and stupid.
@Static Shock said:exactly the problem here.stop being ignorant and actually read peoples posts.@Caligula said:Yeah and he was in the movie for about 10 seconds. So why are we discussing how wrong it is for them to change the race of a character like Perry White. It's not disrespectful for them to pick a guy that can play the character as the character was. I can respect a change in race more than a total change in personality. I'd much rather have Lawrence Fishburne or any black actor that could play as Perry White than some white actor who also looks nothing like him and can hardly play the role correctly.
@cascadeking09 said:You can watch who you're calling ignorant. All I did was say he was in the movie for ten seconds and nobody knew who he was. @Caligula: Lol for any comic fan I'm sure they would've been more upset about Harvey Dent being in the movie just to be in the movie. He didn't even do anything important, so obviously that didn't matter. So why are we discussing how wrong it is for them to change the race of a character like Perry White. LARRY IS A FINE ACTOR, AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO HIM IN THE FILM. THAT DOES NOT HOWEVER EXCUSE THE POINTLESSNESS OR IGNORANCE IN A RACE CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
every single point you brought up in this response has already been brought up and shot down by me or others like a flaming rocket. earlier in the thread.@Caligula: I'm sure you wouldn't be saying anything if some unkown actor WHO IS WHITE, BUT LOOKS NOTHING LIKE PERRY had been cast as him. There is nothing wrong with that as long as the role is played right. If he's not the main character and his role isn't any bigger than it was in any of the other superman movies then why are you making this big a deal out of it? You act as if they only did it to have another black character in the movie and maybe you didn't realize the majorly popular character who isn't even portrayed as have any sort of hispanic background.
and as to why I care about it. uhmm... let me think... because I f***ing read Superman comics.
In case I'm not being clear enough changing a character's race is WRONG if the change is only to add another character of a certain race, but there isn't anything wrong with casting the right actor for the right role. Perry's character doesn't revolve around being a caucasian american. His role is editor and chief of the daily planet, he's not even the most important character in the movie so I don't see any reason for his race being brought up at all.
