The prospects Batman Vs Superman (or whatever it is called) being a film I would consider "good" were never high. Warner Bros. announced the film soon after Man of Steel came to theaters, generally being met with a "meh" response. Annouced during SDCC it was one of many franchise annoucements that seemed to jump on the latest bandwagon "the crossover"; all coming of as an attempt to not be left out of the nerd conversation once Diney announced The Avengers: Age of Ultron. The announcement felt slapdash a move, more to save face and chase Avengers money, not create good super hero cinema. The tight production schedule of roughly a year with about 8 months to write the script before principle photography began didn’t help either. David Goyer may not be my favorite writer, but no writer can turn in a good script on the time table given.
Warner Bros. has sent out a press release (posted below) stating that untitled Superman/Batman film’s theatrical release has been pushed into May 6, 2016 after an initial release date of July 17, 2015. The rumors of this film’s production haven’t been the best. Constant talk of just about every member of the Justice League making an appearance in some form or the other, making you wonder what kind of movie is this. They call it the sequel to Man of Steel and a Superman film at heart but how would that work if you are having all these other characters show up. The film up until now still lacked a proper synopsis or logline. It sounded like a mess. It's chances were about as good as Star Wars Episode VII by my estimation.
An interesting not is, the line that the new release date allows “the filmmakers time to realize fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story.”, film is a visual medium and blockbuster productions such as this have most VFX/major set pieces at least pre-vized out so that they can actually be made during prinicple photography. That line essentially says that they are making major changes to the set pieces and structure of the plot and now need time to make them again. That could be a great thing. I want Superman Vs Batmanto be good, like all movies. If more time saves them from making a terrible set piece laden soulless piece of cinema, great.
Also apparently there is a untitled Peter Pan film from Joe Wright in production, that might be interesting.
BURBANK, CA – January 17, 2014 – Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that the release of Zack Snyder’s untitled Superman/Batman film has been moved to May 6, 2016, allowing the filmmakers time to realize fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story. The decision was made following the shift of the start of production to second quarter of this year. The Studio has also set a July 17, 2015, worldwide release date for its as-yet-untitled all-new Peter Pan adventure. Joe Wright will direct the epic live-action film about the boy who would never grow up, created by J.M. Barrie. The dual date announcement was made by Dan Fellman, President, Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President, International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
