    Didn't he lose his powers in decimation? Then the High Evolutionary had somekind of energy blasted at him to restore his powers. Maybe his second hand exposure to the phoenix force is conflicting with the previous power restoration.

    Thoughts?

    strong possibility i wonder what the long term side effects are gonna be, i can see magneto with a power upgrade... id honestly want to see him younger now, maybe put mag's brain in Joesph's body. maybe his power fluctuations start to kill him & that was the whole set up for the joesph revamp

    The High Evolutionary gave him sort of "false" powers. I don't think they were necessarily genetic powers. When hope restarted the mutant population, I think it erased whatever the High Evolutionary gave him, and kickstarted his old genetic powers. So, now he's starting over from square one, as if he were a teenager again.
