The younger sister of Colossus. Illyana Rasputin is a mutant teleporter, a sorceress, and the ruler of Limbo, who is currently a member of Storm's team of mutants residing in the "Jean Grey Institute for Higher Learning".
I was reading bits from New Mutants and I noticed Illyana's speech pattern is more of a typical american. Originally, her speech pattern was like her brother's.
Not really. She still couldn't speak english when she escaped Limbo so she must've been speaking russian the whole time. I'm guessing Chris Claremont has taken some missteps in her character but that's just my guess.
I can see your point there, Phoenix of the Black Throne, but I remember reading Uncanny X-men #160 about the time she was abducted by Belasco. When she ecaped seven years later, she still spoke russian and Professor X taught her english telepathically. I liked Illyana's characterization in the beginning of New Mutants but it suffered in the middle of the series. I remember her behaving cold and apathetic with a no-nonsence attitude whenever she becomes evil but I feel Chris Claremont decided to make her a bit wild with a touch of a "devil-may-care" attitude.
@pixelized: You're right. I imagine Illyana would have to willingly allow Xavier to enter her mind, even subconsciously. Perhaps she is only immune to invasive psychic attacks? That, or it is an oversight.
Classic example of Claremont getting his own storylines mixed up. Don't forget, he had her using magic on Earth to begin with, but he later retconned that to 'she can only use magic in Limbo, and summon her Soulsword on Earth). During the New Mutants, the Professor could only read her mind when she'd left her Soulsword in Limbo/tried to purge herself of the Darkchilde (issue 50). It wasn't clearly explained, and was handled in the typical blasé way that comics would abuse characters in any way possible to further the plot.
Anyway, Illyana spoke English during the Illyana & Storm: Magik mini series. Personally, I figure she learnt a foreign language from people who spoke that language in a foreign world. She has also been forced to speak it since she was about 5 or 6, with little need to speak Russian since she was a little girl. Therefore her English accent is more Americanised than Colossus' was to begin with :)
No idea. Has anyone tried to read her mind since she's come back? Blindfold was able to predict the future & therefore knew that Illyana was lying... but that doesn't mean she knew what she was thinking by reading her mind.

When I was reading the Magik Limited Series, I assumed the characters spoke russian to Illyana ever since Professor X telepathically taught the X-men that language so the six year old Illyana could feel comfortable staying with them. Sometimes, he dismisses previous interpretations of her character, but she definitely seems more "noble" (?) in his writing.
@Illyana Rasputin: I guess the word "respectfully" isn't the correct word for me to use so it's more like keeping with the character flow based from her back story without the inconsistencies (I still dislike the slumber party issue). Believe me, I don't hate the previous writers for the inconsistencies, it just irks me.
