M-Day (otherwise known as the Decimation) is the day in which millions of mutants in the Marvel Universe lost their powers. It was also the day in continuity that the House of M took place in.
The day itself is November 2 (confirmed by Sabretooth in X-Men #191) and it is considered the Decimation because though the numbers are not certain, it has been stated than over 99% of all mutants lost their powers to this catastophe caused by three words stated by Wanda Maximoff, "No More Mutants." The energies of these depowered mutants converges to form The Collective, its host body being the mutant, Michael Pointer, its dominant mind being Xorn who gave Magneto his powers back and then slaughtered Alpha Flight.After it was hurled into the sun, it seemed all hope was lost for the depowered mutants and anti-mutants were swiftly picking off the survivors of the massacre. Though some have been repowered, about just as many have been killed. And so the world has been drastically changed, at least as far as the mutants are concerned.
The true fate of mutantkind will be resolved in the current storyline, X-Men: Messiah Complex.
It was originally said that the remaining number of mutants was 198. But, stated by Henry Gyrich, there are thought to be around 300 mutants left, with only 198 catalogued by the U.S. goverment. Since the, several different factor have effected this number, one being that several mutants have been killed e.e. Banshee and Icarus.
Depowered Mutants
Some of the more recognizable depowered mutants include:
- Magneto
- Professor X
- Polaris
- Quicksilver
- Jubilee
- Wind Dancer
- Chamber
- Sunfire
- Danielle Moonstar
- Callisto
- The Blob
- Rictor
While many of them have been artifically repowered, these characters no longer possess the X-Gene that brands them a mutant.
The only possible exceptions are Professor Xavier, who was repowered by the reality altering M'Kraan Crystal and Quicksilver, whose powers spontaneously returned while a prisoner in a jail cell (see X-Factor: The Quick and the Dead).
