Lydia Deetz was the girl menaced by Beetlejuice in the namesake 1988 film and his would-be bride. In the animated series which followed Lydia was instead his best friend. In both cases a young goth with a sharp wit and an interest in video cameras.

Lydia Deetz as depicted in the cartoon is an aspiring artist with an interest in photography, video, drawing and sewing. Her only "powers" are the ability to summon Beetlejuice (a ghost) or enter the Netherworld at will. She lives with her father Charles and stepmother Delia. While the interaction between the two ladies of the family is strained, Delia is the only other artist in the family. She attends Miss Shannon's School for Girls in Peaceful Pines, New England. She has a rivalry with schoolmate Clare Brewster.
