Luffy is captain of the powerful Straw Hat Pirates. At the moment, he has the third highest known bounty at 300,000,000 belli. Luffy has incredible strength, enhanced by his ability to gain momentum by stretching. He is a genius in battle, able to create moves off the top of his head.

He has two known "forms" other than his normal one. These are Gear Second and Gear Third. In Gear Second, Luffy speeds his blood flow by starting with a kick to the ground, causing his internal organs to grow and his blood to hyper oxygenate, allowing him to move faster than the eye can see. In Gear Third, Luffy bites his thumb and blows a substantial amount of air into it, making his limb the size of a giant's. This increases his strength greatly. He can use these abilities at the same time, at the risk of great bodily harm. It has been hinted before that he is related to Gol D. Roger, as he, along with several other characters, has the initial "D."

He lost his ability to swim when he ate the Gum-gum fruit. He would not be alive today if he had not got saved from a giant fish by his childhood idol, pirate Captain Red-haired Shanks, who also gave him his signature straw hat which he would fight to the death to protect.

Luffy has an overwhelming spirit and loyalty to his friends,once he starts some thing he never gives up. Luffy has a ferocious appetite and because of his gum gum powers he can eat until his body swells unto 3 times its normal size.

Luffy was raised to be tough by his grandfather, Monkey D. Garp. His father is Monkey D. Dragon, and he has a brother, Portgas D. Trace.

Luffy has defeated countless enemies, some being of the highest order. Mostly luffy fights the person in charge of the opposing crew, in otherwords the captain. But despit how strong Luffy is he wouldn't be able to take on everybody by himself. With his crew he has tooken down Lady Alvida's Pirates, Axe-Hand Morgan, Buggy's Band of Pirates, The Black Cat Pirates, Don Krieg's Pirate Armada, Arlong Pirates, Wapol Pirates, Crocodile (One of the 7 Warlords) and Baroque Works, Bellamy's Pirates, Enel and the Skypiea Priests, Foxy's Pirate Crew, The Franky Family, over 2000 marines at Enies Lobby, Naval Captains of the Buster Call on Enies Lobby including 3 warships, CP9 (the strongest cipher pol in history), Gecko Moria (Another of the 7 Warlords) and Thriller Bark, Iron Masked Duval and the Flying Fish Riders, Ganzack's Pirates, El Drago Pirates, The Trump Sibling Pirates, General Gasparde's Pirates, Commander Jonathan and his men at Navarone G8 Stronghold, The Acchino Family, Baron Omatsuri, Ratchet, and a handful of bounty hunters along the way.

Luffy has a misfit crew, but they treat each other as if they were brothers and sisters. Each member has a dream that keeps them going which kinda lead to them joining the crew. Monkey D. "Straw Hat" Luffy is th Captain of the Straw Hat pirates and wants to be "King of the Pirates". Roronoa "Pirate Hunter" Zoro is the swordsman and wants to be "The Worlds greatest Swordsman". "Cat Burglar" Nami is the navigator and wants to draw a map of the world. "King of Snipers" Usopp wants to be a brave man of the see and travel to Elbaf, Land of great warriors. "Black Leg" Sanji is the cook and wants to find the "All Blue" a spot in the world where every fish in the world is at. Tony Tony "Cotton Candy Lover" Chopper is the doctor and wants to see the world, expand his horizons, and become a "Miracle Cure" (a docotr that can cure anything). Nico "Demon Child" Robin is the archeologist and wants to find the "True History in the Rio Poneglyph". "Cyborg" Franky is the shipwright and wants to sail the world with his dream ship. "Humming" Brooke wants to see his friend Laboon again.
