Lovers’ Lane was a romance comic published by Lev Gleason. It was modeled on the formula behind Crime Must Pay the Penalty in order to appeal (supposedly) to a male audience as well as to women.
Begun in 1949 with issue #1 (October 1949), it ran until the the Comics Code Authority in 1954 (issue #41, June 1954). The title alone would have spelled doom under the Code, but the plot lines were often grittier than the backlash against comics would tolerate. ("Not Intended for Children", the cover warned.)
Lovers’ Lane was innovative in its occasional use of multi-issue storylines, and the romance was sometimes part of adventure or crime plotlines. It also had a "Dear Abby: clone, “Eloise Taylor Answers Your Love Problems.”
