Lord Of The Jungle
Lord Of The Jungle is a new series published by Dynamite Entertainment that promises to retell the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs story while expanding on it at the same time. I decided to pick up the first issue basically because they were only charging $1.00 and the covers caught my eye. No harm taking a chance for a price like that.
The story is written by Arvid Nelson, a writer I'm not familiar with offhand. It's very fast paced as Jonh Clayton and Alice's story unfolds. They're stranded on an island and left to fend for themselves. To make matters more difficult, Alice is pregnant. We see their final days up until the birth of their son, and then their deaths. A grieving John is weeping at the bedside where his wife lie when a pack of gorillas enter their home and attack and kill John. They take the baby and leave which is where this first issue ends.
The art is by Roberto Castro and it was incredible. This was definitely one of the high points of the comic. Alex Guimaraes was the colorist whose gorgeous colors topped off Castro's stunning pencils. The issue comes with four different covers you can choose from. I opted to pass on the Alex Ross, Ryan Sook and Paul Renaud covers and go for the Lucio Parrillo cover which really caught my eye.
Not too bad but it's not exactly the most thrilling first issue of a comic series. It does get your feet wet and set the basis of the story. I wouldn't mind following it on a monthly basis except for the fact that I'm sure this being a Dynamite title, the price will jump up to $3.99 each issue going forth. I just don't feel like adding a $3.99 book to my monthly pull-list. It is something I would pick up eventually in trade format. Until then it looks like my adventures of Tarzan will be put on hold. Being $1.00 I would recommend picking up the first issue and giving it a shot.
