Loki: Agent of Asgard #1

Note: LOKI: AGENT OF ASGARD goes on sale February 5th.

The Good

The start to this new series comes out swinging as Loki is sent out on missions from All Mother and becomes, as the title says, an agent of the newly reformed Asgard. I've never been a big fan of the Asgardian part of Marvel, but I always found Loki interesting, especially how he's evolved over the years. I thought reading this book was going to be a drudge through the muck because I wasn’t incredibly interested in world of Asgard. I was wrong.

What this issue does extremely well is making sure new readers not only feel comfortable, but that they feel up to date with everything that has happened to this character, in a good amount of detail, through some narration by Loki. Writer Al Ewing does a great job at capturing this version of Loki extremely well though his inner-dialogue, as well guiding new folks along for the ride.

Story wise, it jumps around a tad, and it almost feels like a Loki book is bit forced, but aside from that, I’ve never had this much fun with an Asgardian character. It really put a dumb smile on my face to watch Loki go through his paces as an Asgardian Agent. And the ending was incredibly awesome. I think this is something fans will really enjoy.

The art by Lee Garbett, with Nolan Woodard on colors does a great job at telling the story here. Garbett gives the reader some really cool establishing shots as well as some very memorable panels that will stick with the reader, even after setting the book down for hours. The art is extremely consistant and that final page will get you extremely excited for upcoming issues.

The Bad

Thor comes off as a bit of a goof here and Thor fans may not be too keen on it. For me, though, it's kind of what I enjoyed about the issue.

It's no secret that Loki has been extremely popular because of his appearance in the recent Marvel films. Now, does this new series exist because Al Ewing has a great story to tell or is it because Marvel was pushing a Loki series because he's popular? It is a question on my mind, but not one on my mind while I read the issue. This is a mere after-thought.

The Verdict

LOKI: AGENT OF ASGARD isn't without its faults. Sure, the story may feel a tad forced and just a way for the hyper-popular Loki to get his own book, but I found myself really loving what is going on, and I'm normally not a fan of anything Asgard. This was an incredibly fun read, and while it be pretty easy to toss this book a 4/5, I can't remember the last time a creative team made me enjoy a character I normally couldn't care less about. Ewing and Garbett deliver a very new reader friendly book with an ending that will have readers very excited. It's easy to get hooked on this book, if you're new. Overall, I'd recommend this issue.

I might read this just because I don't like Thor

I like that you said Thor comes off as a goof. With it being Loki's book you'd expect to get the story through his filter.

I'm so ready for this. I really like Ewing's writing and that art is quite gorgeous.

Naysayers might want to pick up the book anyway. The thing he says about the last page is no shit. Set aside the pretty boy prejudice for five seconds.

Don't like his new look a whole lot. But thankfully it sounds like the story is great.

I'm disappointed the incredibly talented Lee Garbett left art duties on the awesome X-O Manowar series for this. Oh well it's a pass from me.

I'm not sure about Loki's "new" look - but everything else seems pretty damn awesome! I'm really looking forward to a solo Loki series, he deserves it.

Odin wasnt exiled, he left, to another part of space called Old Asgard, to look after his brother near dead body and to prevent Serpent from even returning again.

Yet another first issue that I feared would come off badly and didn't. In fact, the ending just about stunned me and in a perturbed, wth?! kind of way which usually means something awesome is in the works.

As for Loki's new look -- it's not "new" as it's been revealed in the last few issues of the discontinued "Young Avengers" and even before then as an even younger version of himself. Anyone who has been reading Journey into Mystery (prior to Sif's taking over of the title) and the afore-mentioned Young Avengers shouldn't be surprised at how Loki looks right now. Why all the derisive, pretty-boy comments? How does Loki appearing handsome and younger-looking ruin the character (or affect him, negatively?). This isn't Lobo we're talking about here, either.

Anyway, I am very happy. Another NOW title which did not disappoint.

Loved this issue, finally my favorite villain (now hero?) is getting the attention he deserves and lost years ago.

I was mildly cheesed when they flashed Kid Loki into teen Tom Hiddleston, but I cant deny I enjoyed this probably more than I wanted to.

Still, I'm not that stoked on the final reveal. I'm sure they can make it work but is good guy Loki ever really going to get an arch villain who isn't himself?

It really pains me that people are coming on here to diss this book and they haven't even read it. I just read this issue and IT WAS AWESOME. The art was fantastic, the writing was so fluid, and there was great humor in it. Thor did come off as a goof ball, yes, but I feel that's needed for some characters as sometimes they're written too seriously. I really do suggest people check out this series, even if your poor excuse is hating his costume, because it's going to be one of those really great underrated books.

Also, can someone please discuss with me the final page…because I am just in shock.

I love the double standard of men hating a character being designed as a "pretty boy" (Lobo, Loki) yet are completely okay with women being whored out all across the comics medium.

This book surpassed all of my expectations. An awesome issue indeed.

This was amazing. I'm adding it to my pull. But now I have to find something else to drop to add Iron Fist later :(
