Thor and Loki in A Dark World

The third issue of the Loki miniseries tells the story of the funeral of Balder, a massive ritual that was witnessed not just by the Aesir, but by the denizens of many realms. Following the traditional Norse funeral, Frigga calls upon the gods to go to Hell and bring Balder back. None wanted to face their sister Hela, so Loki volunteered. But the mysteries surrounding Balder's death still haunted Thor, so he chose to accompany his brother.

This series is good for what it is - a fairly straight retelling of Norse myths that ties them into the Marvel versions of the characters. Unlike Lee & Kirby's seminal work, 'Tales of Asgard', or the other recent Loki miniseries by Rob Rodi, this one does not aspire to carve out new territory or build much upon the legends. If straightforward mythology in comic form is what you expect, you won't be disappointed. If you crave more, you'd best look elsewhere.
