I don't know what got into me yesterday, but I decided to pick up the first issue of Superman Unchained. I am not sure why, even after having done so. I suppose that although I don't have anything against the character, that I will simply never be a Superman fan. What I did get while reading this was how much of a Lois Lane fan I could be, even though she only showed up in about three panels. The concept of Lois Lane from Flashpoint was a neat one for me, how she was re-imagined as an freedom fighter, and I have often said that a series with Lois acting in the role of gritty foreign correspondent would be interesting to me.
I noticed another connection as I was reading yesterday though. As not as much of a Superman fan I tend to only read the occasional story focused on the character. This means that I don't get to see Lois very often at all (I do read the 1960s version when I can find them, but they are pretty rare.) The few times that I do see Lois consistently were in Batman - Hush and For Tomorrow. The connection is that they were drawn by Jim Lee, and so when I saw Lois in the book yesterday it reminded me of these other connections, as tenuous as they may be. It is strange connection though as I am somewhat indifferent to Lee's pencils (the are good, just I am not really a fan) and the dissociation with the character makes it even less of a connection. Somehow though when I see Lee drawing Lois it makes sense to me, instantly recognizable and as good a depiction as any.
