Alpha Squadron

Alani Ryan is a teenage mutant from Hawaii. At a young age she quickly developed a talent for surfing. After gaining her mutant powers she became a student at the Xavier Institute. She was known to be a very good student in all classes but Chemistry, mainly because she disliked it. Alani was eventually placed in Alpha Squadron and took up a codename, Loa. Alpha Squadron was a training squad advised by the X-Man, Northstar. When Northstar was apparently killed by Wolverine, the squad was overtaken with grief. The advising duties were then taken over by Karma.

After M-Day, Loa was one of the twenty-seven students to retain their powers. She was also one of the students Emma Frost placed in the fateful all-out brawl that would determine who would become the new X-Men trainees, but didn’t make the cut.

Loa was one of the students seen listening to Blindfold’s tale about Magik. After the students realized that this wasn’t a story but more of a warning, they were all sucked down to Limbo. After the students landed in Limbo, they were attacked by a huge number of demons.  Loa was then shown using her powers for the first time. When a demon attempted to punch her in the stomach, his hand went straight through her, but was sliced to ribbons on the other side. When Magik went to confront Pixie, Loa jumped to attack her, but Magik blasted her to the ground with her powers.
