Ayla Ranzz, also known as Lightning Lass or Spark is a heroine in the DC Comics universe. She is a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes. Edit
Pre-Zero Hour
Ayla Ranzz is the twin sister of fellow Legionnaire Lightning Lad and the younger sister of the villainous Lightning Lord. All three gained their lightning powers after being attacked by creatures called lightning beasts on the 'lightning world' of Korbal.
She originally joined the Legion disguised as her brother Lightning Lad, claiming to be her brother back from the dead, after Lightning Lad's apparent death at the hands of Zaryan. Her imposture was soon discovered, but she was admitted into the Legion as Lightning Lass.
For many years she was called Light Lass, after Dream Girl used the science of her homeworld Naltor to change Ayla's lightning powers with the ability to make objects super-lightweight, or anti-gravity powers. (The Light Lass powers were explained both ways over the years.) The SW6 Ayla Ranzz with the Anti-Gravity powers took the code name Gossamer.
Ayla regained her lightning powers in a battle with Lightning Lord, this occurred after Ayla had left the Legion for a time, disillusioned with her Legion career and having just broken up a lengthy romance with fellow Legionnaire Timber Wolf. She broke up with him following a misunderstanding when she saw Timber Wolf embracing her sister-in-law Saturn Girl when both were stranded on a frozen asteroid. Later Ayla entered into a romantic relationship with Shrinking Violet.
Post-Zero Hour
Ayla gained her powers in much the same way her pre-Zero Hour counterpart did. This time, however, she joined the Legion as a replacement for her brother, Garth. because of his illegal activities in search of their brother, Mekt, Garth was wanted by the police, and not the type of person Winath wanted representing them in the Legion. So, Garth was out and Ayla was in. This caused understandable friction between the two, but once R.J. Brande assumed the presidency, he lifted the restriction that limited membership to one member per planet.
Ayla was part of the group that was sent back to the 20th century after a battle with the Emerald Eye and their teammate, Shrinking Violet. Ayla seemed to enjoy the 20th Century, but during her stay she traveled into the Source - the mysterious energy field that lies at the center of the universe. Her contact with the Source changed her powers - she was now able to nullify gravity, a change that she disliked greatly.
When she returned to the 30th century, she started having serious psychosomatic problems, which were diagnosed as a reaction to having powers different than her twin. Desperate, they went back to Korbal to try to re-imbue her with her original powers, but they were unsuccessful and she died. She was, however, revived by her brother, who took advantage of the supercharged atmosphere of Korbal to channel a massive blast of electricity into her. She awoke unharmed, and with her old powers returned to her.
After the death of her brother, she tried to take his name - Live Wire - to honor him, but the change was not the right one. She kept her old name, and was overjoyed to find that, though changed, her brother still lived.
