Legion

History

Professor X (Charles Xavier) and Gabrielle Haller had a relationship in the past, while both were in Israel.  As a result of this relationship, Gabrielle had a child and she named him David Charles Haller.  Charles Xavier was unaware of the child, due to the fact that David's birth occurred after their relationship had ended.

While in Paris with his mother, David's house was attacked by a team of terrorists. This event, ultimately, caused him to unconsciously use his psionic powers.  As a result of him unleashing his psionic powers, the minds of the terrorists were incinerated.  However, as this occurred, David found himself mentally linked with his terrorist assailants, allowing him to see the thoughts of these individuals as they died.  David, also, ended up absorbing the consciousness of the terrorist leader, Jemail Karami, into his own.  The trauma of this entire situation led to the splintering of David's personality, and left him in a catatonic state.

Once his consciousness was absorbed into the mind of David, Karami found that he controlled Haller's telepathic powers.  Karami attempted to unify David's multiple personalities into his core personality.  However, he was met with opposition from two personalities in particular: Jack Wayne, an adventurer (controls David's telekinetic powers), and Cyndi, a rebellious girl (controls David's pyrokinetic powers).  Wayne, in particular, wished to destroy Karami's consciousness so that he could preserve his own existence in the mind of David.  Karami fought the resisting personalities in a dreamscape in Haller's mind that was a mix of Paris and Beirut.

While in his mind, the absorbed psyches retain their individual existences and take the side of Jack Wayne in the war amongst the personalities.  Mirage, however, stops Wayne from destroying Karami because Karami had told Gabrielle Haller and her that he had actually been trying to help David.  Mirage and Karami, with the help of Wayne, restored David's mind to a near normal state.  Thus, Legion was no longer autistic and his core personality took control of both his body and mind.  These individuals (Mirage and Karami) also restored everyone to their bodies outside of David's mind, as well.

There have also been several instances where Legion was influenced or possessed by the Shadow King.  While protecting Muir Island from the Reavers, Legion, under the influence of the Shadow King, killed Destiny.  Later on, Legion was made the Shadow King's new host body, and fought both the X-Men and X-Factor.  As a result of this battle, the Shadow King vanishes and Legion falls into a coma.

When Mystique seeks revenge for Destiny's murder, Legion awakens from his coma with his mind fully healed.  Haller, now, wishes to see his father's dream of mutant and human coexistence become a reality.  In order to do this, however, he must kill Magneto.  Legion begins by building a black dome in the Negev Desert, and the X-Men go and investigate the situation.  Upon entering the dome, the X-Men battle Legion but cannot stop him from opening a time portal.  Along with Legion, Psylocke, Iceman, Storm and Bishop are sucked into the timestream.  Legion, along with the four X-Men, end up 20 years in the past, and all also emerge from the time stream lacking memories.  Legion is transported to the Israeli hospital where Professor X and Magneto were working at that time.  At the hospital, Magneto touches Legion as he helps him from his bed, causing a psychic backlash.  This particular backlash results in the formation of illusions of Magneto's past.  When Magneto seeks out Professor X, the two individuals return to find Legion creating projections of members of the X-Men.

Legion engages in a brutal battle with Magneto.  The X-Men (who regained their memories thanks to Cable) attempt to intervene and stop Legion from his goal of, ultimately, killing Magneto.  After Iceman freezes every molecule of water in Legion's body, they believe that they have won the battle.  However, Legion escapes from his frozen state and quickly incapacitates the X-Men using a massive amount of telepathic energy.  With the X-Men down and Magneto up against the ropes, Legion creates a psi-blade and grabs the beaten body of Magneto.  As he attempts to plunge the psi-blade into Magneto's skull, Professor X gets between the two and takes the blow from the psi-blade.  This lethal attack kills Charles Xavier and creates an alternate timeline, known as the Age of Apocalypse.

In this alternate timeline, Apocalypse is the supreme ruler of all of North America and implements a worldwide genocidal campaign.  In order to stop this timeline from occurring, Bishop, with the help of the heroes from this era, is sent back in time to save Charles Xavier from his untimely death.  Upon his arrival, Bishop confronts Legion and plunges the psi-blade into his own chest.  This technique allows Bishop to absorb Legion's energy and unleash it over and over again.  The connection established between the two individuals also allowed Legion to see images from the Age of Apocalypse.  This loop of psionic power mortally wounds Legion.  Before dying, Legion apologizes for the nightmare that he had caused.

After his death, several of Legion's multiple personalities remained on Earth in the form of spirits.  When these spirits were terrorizing Israel, Excalibur was called to stop them, and Meggan uses her power of empathy to calm the spirits.  This allows Legion's personalities to, finally, move on. 

Return

Although it has yet to be explained how David has returned from the dead, he is the first adversary for the newly reformed New Mutants.  When Dani Moonstar and Karma go in search of a  young mutant girl, Karma attempts to use her powers to locate the mutant girl.  Since the mutant girl's consciousness was in Legion's body, Karma becomes trapped as well.  His body has become host to Karma's trapped psyche, while her body was found across town.  His body is also host to possibly hundreds of other personalities, including Jack Wayne who seems to be the dominant, or at least leader of the angry mob of psyches in Legion's mind.  At the same time, the Jack Wayne was in pursuit of Dani Moonstar, who remained depowered since the events of M-Day.

It was revealed that strong symbologies exist in the realmspace of Legion's fractured psyche. It is hinted that the young mutant girl is really simply one of Legion's personalities, one that can shapeshift. In his mind, Legion's other personalities, including Jack Wayne, pursue the girl persona not to do her harm, but so they can gain possession of a doll she is holding. The doll represents the key to conscious control of Legion's body, for whichever persona gained access to the doll could not only make Legion's body move and speak, but could also manifest their unique power.

Powers

Legion is a powerful mutant with vast psionic abilities.  Each personality of David's could control different powers. As David grew older, his condition grew worse.

Due to his multiple personalities and genetic potential he could and has possessed different powers. Some of his powers and their respective personalities are as follows.

Manipulation of probability - Sylvester

Pyrokinesis - Cyndi - He is also a pyrokinetic which enables him to create fire. Sometimes, he uses this power as an illusion such as using it to make things appear that they are burned though they are not. This is possible because of his split personality named Cyndi. A girl who was one of his split personalities.

Telekinesis - Jack Wayne - While in this form, Legion can levitate materials using his mind which have the limit of levitating up to 10 tons. He also uses this to create protective force fields.

However, Legion has powers that originally evolved in himself. Such as telepathy, which allows him to mentally communicate with other beings, detect others through the use of mind, hide from mental detection, mentally control others or even paralyze their minds. He can also create mental illusions that can make his target see what is not real.

He also yields a psychic knife that hurts mentally as he focuses on using her psychic powers. He can also create psychic blasts which are comparable to concussive blasts, though ,it attacks the minds of its target.

Legion can also convert himself into an astral form which enables him to travel through astral planes and create psychic weapons.

He can also teleport and go to distances and could also travel through time.

At first, Legion had a hard time having total control of his powers since his split personalities differ in powers and abilities. But as he masters his powers, some of his personalities were able to control some of his powers.

In the Ultimate universe, Charles Xavier's son is still named David, but his mother is Moira MacTaggart and he becomes Proteus. His personality, powers and motives are all likewise a combination of the mainstream Legion and Proteus. After possessing Psylocke, tormenting his father, and slaughtering hundreds across Europe, he is killed by Colossus.
