    Legion of Super-Heroes

Team » Legion of Super-Heroes appears in 1647 issues.

The Legion of Super-Heroes are a team of teen-age super-heroes in the 30th and 31st centuries of the DC Universe who were inspired by the adventures of Superboy/Clark Kent/Kal-El (Pre-Crisis). Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, and Saturn Girl are the founding members.

Please help me ID a very early legion of superheroes...

...I read the issue around the mid-60s.

It was one of the first comics I remember reading.

(I'm trying to identify it so I can then try to find it.)

    Here's what I recall:

1)one by one the legionnaires are killed(this may have been what was once euphemistically referred to as an "imaginary tale")...

2)... until Superboy along with Lightning Lass and I believe Brainiac 5 arrive at a solution at the end which undoes all the havoc; somehow.

3)I recall surprise at the central role played by Lightning Lass.

4)I remember dismay that Mon-el was "killed" off at the very beginning.

5)I seem to remember Ultra Boy being one of the last 4 or 5 legionnaires to be done away with.

6)I'm convinced it was an older comic even back in the mid-sixties, so it was probably printed in the early sixties or even the late fifties.

Not much to go on, obviously, but I hope one of the knowledgeable denizens of this forum can help me out.

    thanks.

I'm trying hard to recall anything I can from the issue. For now, this is unfortunately all I can manage. I'm still trying to see if I can cull more detail from memory. thanks for the interest.

Is that an original you bought back then, or did you buy it much later on?

If so, it must have fetched a pretty penny.

Even today, his cover art evokes my childhood and the magic of comics for a kid.

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with Michael Turner. Which titles does he draw?

Currently I only buy issues of Robin now and then.

By the way, I don't recall Curt Swan's art in association with my [death] issue of the legion from way back when.

Thanks. Now I know what Mr. Turner's work is like. I can see why you appreciate his talent so much!

He appears to draw pretty women. I was in a comic store the other day and a very recent comic featured a heroine with braces. How unique. She was very well drawn. I don't know if she would have been done by Mr. Turner.

yeah, he's still working... he's just not on his full load yet...

back before he was diagnosed he was working on Fathom, Ekos, Soulfire and stuff for DC and Marvel...

now he's only doing commissions for DC / Marvel while doing one or two projects of his own

Mr. Turner's lines seem to be rigid. His characters all seem grim and angry. Except for the babes.

Curt Swan's lines seemed so much softer. His characters had an avuncular appearance to me.

If you are still looking I would browse the entries for Adventure Comics from around #320 to #380. That would place you in the right time frame and most likely the correct title. There were appearances of group in other titles during the sixties, but they are pretty scattered around and the ones in Superboy are very Smallville centered. A quick way to do this might be checking out my Legion of Super-heroes Completist list. The list is in chronological order and I put the dates in the description of each book on the list. I'm still working on the list, but I am well into the mid-1970s so it will cover the time period you are looking for. Good luck!
