Simon & Kirby reimagined the MLJ Comics Shield in 1959 at the dawn of the Silver Age. When Simon & Kirby created Captain America for Marvel, MLJ complained to Timely that it was a rip off of the Shield. Likewise When Simon & Kirby created the Shield for Archie, DC complained to Archie that it was a rip off of Superman. The series was canceled after the second issue and the Original Shield's son Bill Higgins replaced Lancelot Strong as the Shield in the Archie Universe. Lancelot Strong returned in the 80s with the Original Shield. However that was short lived and he has not returned since.
