Creator's Thoughts

Ron Mraz was challenged to create a new character for the ongoing series Green Lantern in 1994, he was supposed to be a third generation hero, one for the new generation of comic readers. He was told to make the character from scratch, not to use one that had previously appeared in the DCU.

The character was scheduled to take over for Hal Jordan , not an easy thing to accomplish when Hal had so many fans.

In 1994, Marston wrote:
"We knew we’d have our readers, Hal was one of DC’s second-tier icons, and pulling the big switch with him was going to bring in everyone from the curious to the plain ol’ pissed off. So we’d have our readers; the trick would be holding on to them."

Kyle's first appearance was in Green Lantern #48 in a storyline called ‘Emerald Twilight.’ This storyline was one of the big ones for DC; ever since the Death of Superman , the DCU had been feeling the shock waves, and Hal was arguably one of the biggest. Since the destruction of Coast City in The Death of Superman , Hal found himself homeless, his home destroyed and everyone he knew and cared about gone.

Emerald Twilight

Kyle’s first words in Green Lantern comics.
"I wish we could somehow get away from out troubles. Get out of this place... leave... escape."

Kyle, to be frank, was a nobody. A struggling graphic designer who was out at a bar trying to relax when destiny chose him, destiny by the name of Ganthet . Arriving outside the bar he handed the last Power Ring to Kyle before disappearing in a green burst of light. Kyle was understandably confused at the sight of a blue midget appearing and disappearing but decided to try on the ring anyway, and from there his life changed, and not always for the better. Kyle’s first fight was with a villain calling himself Ohm where he found himself doing better than he thought he would.

"Lack of confidence never really was one of my short comings, can’t recall ever being at a loss for words too often either. Maybe this is the right line of work for me."

Defeating Ohm, Kyle and his girlfriend Alex were on a beach, with Kyle testing out the ring and Alex taking photos for her magazine when his next big challenge came, this time by the name of Mongul . The fight wasn’t going well; to be honest Kyle was losing quite badly when he found some backup by the name of Superman . Fighting Mongul  together, Superman  spoke to Kyle of the Guardians, the Corps and the previous Green Lantern, none of which Kyle had heard of before, even so Kyle seemed to impress Superman  with his abilities with the ring, even more puzzling was the fact that Kyle’s ring wasn’t vulnerable to yellow, something that all Green Lantern Ring’s in the past had been vulnerable to.

Next came the darkest time in Kyle’s life, the death of his girlfriend at the hands of Major Force .

Major Force  had been hired by a rogue government agency to retrieve the ring from Kyle using any means necessary to get it. During the fight Kyle was to learn something else about the ring, that it required periodic charging or would go dead, leaving him extremely vulnerable in a fight.

Unbeknownst to Kyle, Major Force  had brought the Power Battery with him to the fight, when he got it out to ask Kyle about it, the battery reformed in front of them, automatically charging the ring for Kyle. Being back up to full power, Kyle brought the fight back to Major Force , letting all his anger and rage out. He was about ready to kill Major Force  with an Electric Chair construct when the LASCU (Los Angeles Special Crimes Unit) intervened.

Leaving them to deal with Major Force , Kyle left the scene, going back to his apartment where he found another unexpected guest, Alan Scott , the original Green Lantern, now going by the name of Sentinel.

Alan explained the events leading up to the decimation of the Green Lantern Corps  to Kyle, how Hal had gone mad with grief and had destroyed everything he once stood for.

"Hal’s become something other... with almost limitless power at his command. I was part of a team of heroes who confronted him, he defeated us utterly. Understand, Hal’s not evil. That’s just not the Hal Jordan  I’ve always known. He believes he’s acting for the right reasons... to bring back the seven million people of Coast City, But he’s no less dangerous because of it."

Leaving Kyle to think about what he had just learned, Alan left the scene with the parting words “Time is growing Short”, those words would be truer than they would ever know in the coming months.

Zero Hour; Crisis in Time

 Crisis in Time

Zero Hour was a big thing for the DC universe, it was basically used as a restructuring event for the history of the DC universe, tying up loose ends and changing the past to fit in with the new story lines that had come about.

Parallax, and to a lesser extent Extant , were to be the main tools of this change. Hal was going to restart time, to change all the things that should never have happened in the original time line, to make the universe a better place, with him as God of it all.

For the first few issues we were led to believe that it was Extant  who was behind it all, and only saw brief glimpses of Hal in shadows, manipulating events. Hal finally made his presence known in issue 34 of Zero Hour. Knocking out Superman  with a single punch Hal made his grand entrance, to the disbelief of all who knew him. Among the people to see this entrance were Guy Gardner , Aquaman , Green Arrow , Batgirl , Kyle Rayner and Waverider . Defeating the group easily and sending Kyle on an uncontrolled trip through time with just a click of his fingers, Hal defeated the group easily before destroying time as everyone knew it.

This was just the start of what he had planned. Kyle finally made in back in time for the end gambit, where Batgirl  sacrificed her life to that Green Arrow  could get one shot off, distracting Hal long enough so that Damage, powered up by Waverider , Darkstar  and The Spectre  could let loose a massive explosion, basically causing the big bang himself.

Restarting the DCU finally cleared up a lot of the mess that Crisis on Infinite Earths had left behind, but left its own mess as well. There were now subtle changes in the timeline, Guy Gardner ’s powers had been changed as well as quite a few other changes that would become more apparent as time moved on. This was a new era for DC comics; they now had new heroes and villains in the universe along with the realization that Kyle really was the last Green Lantern.

Final Night

 The Final Night

Final Night was a big storyline for the DCU, not in the fact that it did something major to the time line or made drastic changes to the DCU, but in the fact that it played out in every issue that DC comics published for that time.

The main story was that a Sun Eater was on its way to earth to devour the Sun, forming a team of heroes to combat the threat, Superman  and Batman did their best to restore order on earth, even though with the sun gone Superman ’s powers were fading fast.

At the end of the storyline, Kyle had left earth to seek assistance from someone he knew could help, Hal Jordan . Bringing Hal back to earth for a final push at the Sun Eater was earths only chance for survival.

Pausing time so he could do what must be done, Hal stepped into the Sun and began his final steps as a characters in the DCU. Reciting the Green Lantern Oath he began to fight the Sun Eater on two fronts, shining a light to push the ‘Darkness’ away in one hand, and drawing the ‘Darkness’ into himself on the other. It was a dangerous play, but one that eventually succeeded.

At the cost of his own life, Hal had saved Earth. Hal’s funeral was attended by most of the characters in the DCU, the entire Justice League made appearances with speeches by Kyle, Superman , Wonder Woman  and more. Other faces in the crowd were Green Arrow , John Constantine , Zatanna , Swamp Thing  and Donna Troy .

JLA

Kyle was unofficially inducted into the Justice League Of America  when he unwittingly joined a version of the classic team in the Justice League: Midsummer's Nightmare mini-series. Kyle was relatively inexperienced even compared to the team's other younger member, Wally West   though the two were developing a love/hate friendship.

Kyle was to remain with the team when Grant Morrison began a new Justice League series, JLA, throughout which his creativity, power, and courage were frequently demonstrated. One story featuring the Vertigo character Dream features a scene where that character tells Kyle that he will surpass his predecessor Hal Jordan  because he knows no fear.

Emerald Knights

 Emerald Knights

Emerald Knights was a storyline that ran from issues 100 to 106 of Green Lantern, and promised the team up you never thought you’d see, Kyle Rayner and Hal Jordan .  This series finally put to rest the idea that Kyle was just ‘babysitting’ the ring until Hal came back, Kyle was now a Green Lantern in his own right.

The storyline started in the far future, when Kyle was sent into the 30th century by Grayven , son of Darkseid . He was finally sent back with the aid of Brainiac and the Legion of Super-Heroes to “when there were supposed to be Green Lanterns’, though he overshot a bit and ended up 10 years before his time and found himself fighting Sinestro with the help of Hal Jordan  and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps .

Kyle’s ring however turned out to be a major asset against Sinestro, without the Yellow weakness that the rest of the Corps had, he found himself easily beating Sinestro in a fight, and was finally sent back to his own time by The Guardians, but when he found himself back in his own time, he wasn’t alone. At the last second, Sinestro had used his yellow ring to push Hal into Kyle, sending him to the future with him.

Finding himself in the future, Kyle had no choice but to explain to Hal what had happened to him. His explained how Hal had lost his mind after Coast City was destroyed, how he had fought, and killed the entire Green Lantern Corps . He explained Hal’s atrocities during Zero Hour and finally explained how he had come back in a blaze of honor during earths Final Night and sacrificed his life for Earth.

The storyline got more confusing however when Hal showed signs of going back to his ways as Parallax, in fact Hal, or one of the Hal’s, was found out to be Parallax from Zero Hour who had spotted Hal from the past in the wrong time and had come to fix the mistake. In a frantic battle between Hal as Green Lantern and Hal as Parallax they fought to a standstill, only finally separated by Kyle. Sending Hal and Parallax back to their own time lines Kyle was left with more questions about his own future than he had before, because now he was left with a spare ring from Hal, one that could replicate itself, something Kyle’s ring could never do. W hich left im asking an question could he now rebuild the Green Lantern Corps ?

Circle of Fire

 Circle of Fire

Kyle had finally come to peace with himself and being a Green Lantern, he was finally making a name for himself and not living under Hal’s shadow anymore and had a good relationship with Jade  when Oblivion  came.

This was no normal adversary for the Justice league, when the Justice League Of America  first battle Oblivion  they were defeated utterly. Hearing about the Justice League's defeat, Kyle subconsciously sent out a distress call to any other Green Lanterns in the area, when the ring found no other Green Lanterns in the current time period it started looking elsewhere for them.

Arriving from Pocket Dimensions and other Time frames came six Green Lanterns.

Coming from the year 1256 was Pel Tavin, a Green Lantern Daxamite who protected Darth and sector 2814. This Green Lantern wore the clothes of a knight from medieval times and fought with the same approach to life.

Coming from an unknown point in the future was Ali Rayner-West, a descendant of Kyle’s, he had married one of the “West Clan”, so Ali not only had the powers of a Green Lantern, but those of a speedster as well.

From another unknown point in the future came Hunter and Forest, members of the ‘Teen Lantern Corps’. In a future where the grownups had disappeared, the remaining children of Kyle’s descendants decided to share the ring and the responsibilities that go with it.

From several eons in the past came G.L.7177.B. A man hunter android from when the Green Lantern Corps  was just being founded by the Guardians. Reprogrammed by The Guardians, 7177.B was programmed to “Assist the innocent and eradicate all evil.”

Coming from a pocket universe was Alexandra DeWitt, Kyle’s old girlfriend. In her reality Kyle had been murdered by Major Force  when Alex had been given the ring, all events that had happened to Kyle had happened to Alex in her universe.

Finally fighting Oblivion , Kyle found out the horrible truth. He was responsible for Oblivion . Oblivion  was created by Kyle after the death of Alex, unable to deal with the emotions of his girlfriend’s murder, Kyle subconsciously sent all the negative emotions he had into the ring and them forced them out of his body and into space. Originally just energy, it eventually gained consciousness and then control over the energy.

Fighting Oblivion  on a purely metaphysical plane of existence was the hardest thing Kyle ever had to do, Oblivion  first took the form of Kyle’s father then Kyle himself, it wasn’t until later that Kyle found out the second secret... Alex, Ali, Pel and the other Green Lanterns who had come to assist him weren’t Green Lantern’s at all, but constructs he had made himself that represented his hopes, dreams and his best emotions to fight Oblivion .

This was a major step for Kyle, this showed not only that he was gaining power and control over the ring, but he could not, if only subconsciously for the moment, create constructs that were as lifelike in personality as they were in color, nothing any Green Lantern had been able to do before.

Defeating Oblivion , Kyle left the remains of Oblivion  in the sun, deciding that it was actually time to grow up and face his emotions. Taking the final step Kyle offered to resign from the Justice League Of America  for his part in creating Oblivion . His resignation was however refused with Wonder Woman  and Batman  saying they now both trusted Kyle as a Green Lantern and he was an essential part of the team now.

Ion, Part 1

 I am The Ion!

Finding himself growing in power, Kyle first noticed the small things, like not having to charge his ring any more or being able to create constructs that were greater in power than anything he had been able to do before. While Kyle was fighting Fatality the Quardians chose another bearer for their Yellow Power Ring, Alex Nero .

Nero  was an artist like Kyle, but was severely mentally imbalanced and was being treated in a psychiatric ward for his psychosis when the Quardians found him and offered him their gift.

Facing Nero  at first with Alan Scott  and later the entire Justice League Of America , Kyle confessed his worry to Superman  and Batman  that they might have to kill Nero .

“Did you know I can split atoms with this? It would take a lot of energy, just a lot of effort. The problem would be containing an atomic blast, but if you aren’t interested in containing the blast in any way...”

It seemed like the Justice League Of America  was finally figuring out how powerful Kyle was with the ring, if anyone with a power ring could split atoms and cause an atomic blast with just a thought... maybe they would be forced to use drastic measures to stop Nero  before he figured it out as well.

Defeating Nero  in issue 136, Kyle took the break in his life to do what he had always wanted to do, he asked Jade to marry him.

Using the spare ring Hal Jordan  left him at the end of the Emerald Knights saga, Kyle finally found happiness with Jade  in the engagement. The peace didn’t last though, in issue 143 Kyle’s power increase finally became more apparent than ever.

“For the past year Kyle Rayner has been aware of a great change. The most obvious aspect being that his ring has not needed to be recharged. Less apparent at first was the increase in his power. But as time went on, he noticed it. He felt it. It seemed limitless. It frightened him.”

When Grayven  threatened to destroy New York with a nuclear bomb augmented with Apocalypse technology Kyle unconsciously becomes one with the power he felt growing inside him. When Parallax had died in “Final Night” he had left his power in Kyle, something that was now becoming apparent.

Now Kyle had found the rest of the “Emerald Power” inside him and had joined with it, there was only one step left to take, the power Oblivion  had left in the sun was calling to him to join with it, it was noticed by everyone on earth, including Alex Nero.

Meeting with Jade , Alan Scott and John Stewart , Kyle sought to explain what had been happening to him, the growth in power and how he felt drawn to this new source of power, like he was supposed to claim it. His explanation was interrupted however when they found out that Nero  was after the same power, with that sort of power under Nero ’s control, nothing on earth could stand in his way. Kyle had to get there first and claim the power for himself, or all would be lost.

Defeating Nero , Kyle stood outside of space and time, looking in at his past and his future. With Hal as The Spectre  showing him around, Kyle finally understood what he was supposed to do.

“I am Green Lantern no more. I am not Oblivion . I am Not Parallax. I am more, because I am less. I am a part of it all. I am the whole and I am the individual. I am everywhere at once. Green Lantern is no more, the power is mine... and I am The Ion.”

As Ion, Kyle was omnipotent, he was everywhere at once. During this time he made some drastic changes to the DCU including healing John Stewart 's back so he could walk again and giving Jade  her natural powers back.

Kyle at first found himself using his powers naturally as he had done as a Green Lantern, but as time passed he found himself doing greater and greater things with the power. In issue 146 he decided to go back to a planet that he and Jade  had visited before, in the previous visit they had been unable to stop a world war that had ravaged the world for decades, as Ion he knew he could change this.

Going back to the planet he brought the peace talks together again, and when they failed he stepped in and explained that the war was over, not because they were agreeing or disagreeing on something, but because he was stopping it.

He was going to watch over the planet forever, guns wouldn’t fire, bombs wouldn’t explode. If someone hurled a rock he would be there with his foot on the attackers back. He tried to explain this to Jade  but she couldn’t comprehend it. He was there, but he was also here and on earth doing hundreds of things at the same time, Jade  again compared him to God.

In Issue 150 Kyle’s power was finally at its peak, even The Spectre , the right hand of god was afraid of this power. Kyle could navigate the time stream with ease, making changes as he saw fit but never loosing the thread of the present, something not even Parallax had been able to do.

Finally realizing that this power shouldn’t belong to any one man he made the sacrifice, reigniting the central power battery on OA and bringing back The Guardians Of The Universe , he stepped down from his mantle as Ion and became a regular Green Lantern again, though he had made a few changes to the Ring before he ‘re-forged’ it.

Will you marry me?
Will you marry me?

Now it could never be taken away from him, it would always return, and it would never run out of power again. Finally at peace with himself and knowing that The Guardians would be able to re-forge The Green Lantern Corps , he set out to find his own future with Jade , now they could finally move on with their engagement.

Enough is enough...
Enough is enough...

Endings

During his time on earth Kyle had witnessed some good things and some awful things, he finally saw the worst side of humanity when his assistant, Terry, was brutally attacked by a homophobic gang.

Finally seeing the worst of humanity, Kyle became lost, without hope for the future he left earth with Jade  to find their future in space. He said one day he would return, but for now he didn’t feel that earth was his home anymore.

Returning to Earth for a brief period he fought with Major Force  again, finally putting to rest the fears he had about his Mother and the feelings he still felt about Alex. After a brutal fight with Major Force , Kyle managed to seal his living energy inside an emerald ball and send it drifting out into the universe; Finally putting things right for Alex.

During his time away from Earth Jade  had moved on however, splitting up with Kyle and moving on with her life to find her own future. Finally realizing that Earth had nothing left to offer him, Kyle decided to move on with his own life and find something more for himself, something he could call his own.

Saying a final farewell to Earth, Kyle flew off into space looking for his own future.

Rebirth

The universe always could do with a little more light

In a final Retcon that split Green Lantern fans down the middle DC brought back Hal Jordan  as Green Lantern and changed Parallax so it wasn’t Hal who had gone crazy with grief after the destruction of Coast City, but rather he had been under the influence of an alien Symbiote by the name of Parallax who was the cause of the yellow impurity in the rings.

This retcon wasn’t well received by fan’s, who were on one side happy to have Hal Jordan  back as a Green Lantern, but were appalled by DC for taking away the most human side of his character.

Bringing Hal’s body back to earth to join with his spirit, who was now a host for The Spectre , Kyle fought Parallax, who had taken Ganthet  for a host, with John Stewart , Kilawog, Hal Jordan   and Guy Gardner . Finally defeating Parallax and imprisoning him again, it finally looked like the Green Lantern Corps  were back in business.

Infinite Crisis

During infinite Crisis, Kyle was once again transformed into Ion. With the death of Jade  she passed on her powers of the Starheart to him. Now Kyle goes by the name of Ion and is known to the entire Green Lantern Corps  as the “Torchbearer”.

He now has the ability to control not only the power of a Green Lantern, but has the power of the Starheart as well, augmenting his power far beyond that of a normal Green Lantern, but not up to the power level he was previously as ION.

ION, Part 2

 Ion... again...

Becoming Ion again during the Infinite Crisis was the next major turning point in Kyle’s life, he was now a lot more powerful than any Green Lantern before, though he still had his limits. The Guardians Of The Universe  now called him their Torchbearer, he was seen as an evolution of the Green Lanterns

Working for the Guardians Of The Universe  again was a daunting task for Kyle, made no easier when he found out he should have died in the Infinite Crisis. The Monitor has been watching Kyle since Infinite Crisis and knows something major is about to happen, though it is unsure of what.

At the end of the Ion arc, Kyle’s mother was drastically ill, in hospital dying from an unknown disease that was later found out to be created by the Sinestro Corps in order to get him to join them. Failing in this respect, the Sinestro Corps started other measures, recruiting throughout the known universe to create a Corps that would face, and destroy the Green Lantern Corps  forever.

Kyle becomes the thing he hates the most... Parallax!

The Sinestro Corps

Kyle discovered a yellow power ring flying through space. He brought it to Oa to show to the Guardians, but before he was able to see them, the ring transported him to the Anti-Matter Universe world of Qward. Brought to the antimatter universe by a Quardian Power Ring, Kyle was faced with his greatest challenge yet, the Sinestro Corps. Using his new Ion power he successfully managed to fight off the fear of the Yellow Ring until he found Sinestro speaking before throngs of members of the newly-formed Sinestro Corps. Overpowered by their numbers, Kyle was captured. Sinestro ripped the Ion entity from his his chest and announced the true reason for his mother's death - the virus and Sinestro Corps member Despotellis. In that moment of fear, Sinestro unleashed the Parallax entity on Kyle, transforming him into a new Parallax and herald of the Anti-Monitor.

Now, as Parallax, Kyle is one of the leaders of the Sinestro Corps, along with Superboy Prime, Sinestro, The Anti-Monitor and Cyborg Superman . Quite what the Sinestro Corps have in store for the universe is unknown, though one of their plans is undoubtedly the destruction of the Green Lantern Corps .

Lyssa Drak, Keeper of the book of Parallax now holds the most sway over Kyle and the rest of the Sinestro Corps, her story has yet to be revealed, though in appearance she resembles a Guardian or a Talokian. During the war Parallax confronted Hal Jordan on Qward revealing that he had taken over Kyle Rayner. Parallax and the Sinestro Corps attacked Jordan until the Lost Lanterns arrived as reinforcements. Parallax killed Jack T. Chance after he made Jack feel fear. The Green Lanterns escaped and reclaimed the Ion Symbiote. Parallax went ahead of the Sinestro Corps to Earth to attack Hal's family.

The Corps, reborn
The Corps, reborn

A Green Lantern again

Kyle (Parallax) is confronted by Hal Jordan after he threatened his brother and family. During this confrontation Jordan becomes absorbed by Parallax in addition to Rayner.

Meanwhile, John Stewart orders Guy Gardner to retrieve the painting from Kyle's mother, the one of a little boy in a field, hanging in his dead mother's house. As Guy returns and shows the painting to Parallax. Hal helps Kyle inside his mind, to get rid of Parallax.  After breaking the Parallax control over Kyle, Ganthet and Sayd arrive with the four earth men's lanterns Power Batteries, they trap Parallax within the four of them. After this Ganthet gives Kyle a new power ring and explains that he and Sayd are expelled from the Guardians of the Universe. Ganthet asks Kyle if he is willing to become once again a Green Lantern. Kyle quickly agrees.

After learning of the Blackest Night, from Ganthet and Sayd, Kyle traveled to Coast City with Hal to help defend it from a second wave of Sinestro Corps members. Hal and Kyle quickly warned Hal's family to leave the city but no one in the entire city left. Not a single person. Hal and Kyle flew into space and battled Sinestro and his Corps. They were pushed back down to Earth and continued to fight in Coast City. Sinestro used a group of Manhunters to drain the energy in Kyle and Hal's rings, leaving them defenseless. Hal turned the table and used a Manhunter head to steal Sinestro's energy. The three warriors engaged in a brutal fist fight on rooftops and leading into a construction site. Kyle and Hal defeated Sinestro and arrested him, ending the war.

Kyle's next orders were to give the new Ion, Sodam Yat, some tips. Kyle began to practice with Yat but then Alex Nero attacked. Kyle was getting beaten until Yat managed to step up and used Nero's connection to the Ion energy against him, knocking him out. Yat wondered if Kyle meant to be beaten up so he would have to try hard in the fight. Kyle met up with Hal, John, and Guy and informed them that he was now an honor guard and Guy's partner.

Kyle and Guy's first task was to help rebuild New York. They worked on the Statue of Liberty, which had been wrecked during the battle between Cyborg Superman and Superman. Kyle told Guy what it felt like to be taken over by Parallax.

Kyle's internal battle
Kyle's internal battle
Guy and Kyle decide that since they are honor guards they should be on OA so they decide to pack up all their things and move to Oa, much to John and Hal's surprise. Kyle and Guy explain that they want to open up a bar for Green Lanterns on Oa. Kyle and Guy arrive on Oa with all their things. The first thing Kyle puts up in his apartment is the painting his mother painted, that helped him break free from Parallax. He is now supposedly dating Donna Troy.

War of Light

Kyle enjoyed the rest of his break from duty while readying his apartment on Oa. He was one of the Lantern's already on Oa when the Guardians sent out their emergency call. Waiting before their citadel for the rest of the team, when Guy arrived Kyle led the Lanterns in to confer with the Guardians. As they revealed the mission they had, Kyle was one of the lanterns without any problems. Turning to his fellow lanterns he asked if they needed any clarification, when they didn't he led them out to get to work

Upon arrival in the Vega System, Kyle and Guy stopped their team and got ready for the mission. Giving them their orders and setting up the parameters for rendezvous. Then the team separated into 2 man parties, Kyle with Guy. Kyle and Guy lost no time in tracking down the missing Sinestro rings, and found a newly joined Sinestro in the middle of a Massacre. Kyle and Guy were able to easily overpower and arrest the corpsmen, sending him back to Oa for the Gaurdians.

Kyle grew worried when Sodam and Arisia missed their rendezvous, and as such called the rest of the team back together to search for them. Meeting at their last known coordinates, Kyle contacted Salaak to have him inform the Guardians that they would hold the search until they found their missing Lanterns. When Salaak disagreed, Kyle reminded him who was in charge of the mission, signing off and returning to the search. Tracking the yellow rings energy signatures, they soon found themselves at the planet of the Black Mercies.

Running into the ring of refuse around the planet, Kyle conferred with his ring about it's contents, before plunging through to reach the planets surface. Reaching the planets surface, they were surprised to find it covered in the same. Realizing that the planet was covered in Black Mercies, Guy and Kyle acknowledged the danger. When their team expressed interest, Kyle and Guy informed them of the history of both the Mercies and the villainous warlord known as Mongul. Afterwards they headed back after their missing Lanterns, and followed the trail of the yellow rings to the heart of the Mercy planet. Diving into the growth to rescue their teammates, Kyle and Guy were able to get Sodam and Arisia before they were devoured, and gave them to Natu for inspection.

He was taken by surprise, along with the rest of his team, when Mother Mercy burst out of the ground and assaulted them. When Mother Mercy made telepathic contact with them, Kyle attempted to reason with his team to try talking to the creature, but the hostilities had already begun. When Sodam suggested he handle it, it was Kyle who realized that Stel would be able to battle his way through the gravity to get Sodam to her. After Sodam's attack, Kyle ordered his team to stand down as Mother Mercy removed her children from Sodam and Arisia. Kyle and Guy proceeded to question Mercy on her sentience and she explained how she and her children came to be.

Kyle's Team
Kyle's Team
Just as Mercy finished and prepared to help them with Mongul's plan, he returned and ambushed the Lanterns with her children, as he had Sodam and Arisia earlier. Kyle was once more subjugated to his worst fear, seeing himself failing to hold back the forces of Evil. Mother Mercy freed him and the other Lantern's and after finishing off Duel, they launched into space to catch up with Mongul. Killing the other half of Duel, they launched a full-out assault on Mongul, slamming him into a nearby moon. They fought Mongul to a stand-still, until Bzzd managed to bring him down. Together they blasted him back down to Mercy's surface, where she began feeding him to her children. They then spent a moment to mourn the loss of Bzzd. Following Duel's ring, they found both it and Bzzd's ring had chosen Mother Mercy as it's new bearer. She wasted no time choosing the Lantern ring, and they escorted Bzzd back home.

Returning to Oa, Kyle finished work with Guy on their new restaurant. Though not all their employee's understood the American style menu, their opening night went off quite well. Kyle retired for a few hours sleep after the event, having to train rookies with Kilowog in the morning. During their training session Kyle had success in teaching his students how to break through their enemies defenses, before being interrupted by Natu. Taking a moment to talk to her, Kyle complimented her on her work with the patients. He also asked her about missing the opening of his new restaurant, though she complained about crowds. It then began raining, but it turned out to be a storm of eyes from the family members of Rookie Lanterns. Kyle and Kilowog were enraged, and when Lantern Saarek was able to show them the enemy responsible, set out to find him.

Kyle helped to hunt down the Sinestro responsible for the murders, though in the end it turned out to be multiple perps. Kyle and the Lanterns of his team wasted no time putting them down. Having come upon a plot by Sinestro's to terrorize Lantern's by harming their family members, Kyle became involved in a search for Kryb, a Sinestro becoming notorious for killing Lanterns and stealing their children. They received a distress call from Salaak while searching, that matched her MO. Reaching the 1111 Sector house, Kyle retrieved the corpse of his fellow Lanterns. As he began formulating a plan, Amnee (an expectant mother) rushed to rescue their child from Kryb. Kyle led the Lanterns in a direct assault on Kryb, resulting in the Sector house crashing to the planet below.

Kyle launched a brutal assault against Kryb, enraged by her murder of his fellow Lanterns. Believing her unconscious and harmless in the bounds he placed on her, he prepared to leave the Sector house before impact. He was surprised when Kryb sprayed him with a weird substance, a mind-controlling toxin, that was able to penetrate his shield. Kryb then forced him to defend her from Lantern Amnee, and when she went into labor to hold her down so she could steal the child.

Kryb is shown to be worried by Kyle's willpower, as even though it has yet to be accomplished before, she can feel him pushing back against her mind control. Kyle is able to break free of her control, blasting her away from Amnee. Kyle then turns on his fellow Lanterns, and knowing they aren't themselves, disarms them and uses his ring to purge them of Kyb's toxin in a matter of mere moments. Ordering them to stay and help Kryb, Kyle takes off after Kryb, ready to put a stop to her.

Finding her where she landed, Kyle rockets into her, though Lantern K21 arrives as well, and begins a battle with Kryb. Kyle fights a defensive battle, keeping Kryb back from Amnee and her child, though he seems reluctant to kill her. Just as Kryb is about to make a run for the child, having dazed Kyle and K21, a Star Saphire shows up lending her hand against the Sinestro. Together they battle Kryb, the fight raging to the very edge of the protective bubble around Amnee and her delivery, while Kyle and his fellows are distracted by the Guardians new edict. Kyle promises that it will be the last child Kryb ever sees and together with his fellow Lantern and the Saphire he lasso's her.

Against K21 protest, Kyle refuses to murder Kryb, and K21 blasts him and the Saphire out of the way to do it herself, giving Kryb the perfect opportunity to kill her and flee. Kyle and the Saphire work together again, blasting Kryb from the sky, now encased in Star Saphire. Talking with Soranik about the new law, they are both surprised when Amnee and Matoo both resign from the Corps because of the law against in-corps fraternization. Kyle then has a short confrontation with the Star Saphire about who will take Kryb into custody, admonishing her about their attempts to brainwash former Sinestro's. As a sign of respect he leaves the decision to Amnee and Matoo, who decide to side with Love. When the Star Saphire shows him his hearts desire, he see's Soranik..while she see's him in turn. Promising to deal with it upon their return to Oa, they depart to take their former allies home (though both state they will always be Corps in their eyes), and return K21's corps to her home.

Final Crisis

During the events of Final Crisis, Kyle was on Oa when he and Guy received word of Hal Jordan's accusal. Kyle and Guy investigated the charges, they were unable to get anywhere near Earth, and began to figure out what was really happening. They returned to Oa for Hal's trail, in time to tell the Guardians their findings and attempt to reveal Kraken as being under the influence of an Apokalipton God. They attempted to stop her from reaching the Central Power Battery but were unsuccessful. After her capture, Kyle conferred with Hal and Guy about Earth's situation. They decided to take a force their and take the battle to Darkseid. As they were trying to get to Earth they realized that they were wasting power, shutting off all power but shields, they prepared to land on Earth and confront the Dark Gods.

Challengers From Beyond

Kyle joins Bob the Monitor, Jason Todd, and Donna Troy in their search for Ray Palmer, the one who can stop the "great disaster". Jason and Kyle are usually at odds, both thinking the other is making a move on Donna. During their travels, Kyle is infected by a vampire and transforms into a monster. With the help of an alternate Blue Beetle, Kyle is returned to normal.

The Challengers From Beyond eventually find Ray Palmer on Earth-51, the "perfect Earth". They are betrayed by Bob who conspired against them the whole time. He attempts to kill Palmer but Kyle, Donna, and Jason stop him. Kyle flies Jason away from the fight as Donna escapes with Jason. The villainous Monitor, Solomon kills Bob in an attempt to become the "Prime Monitor". Monarch and his army arrive prepared to face the Monitors in combat. A battle ensues and Kyle and Ray are attacked by a group of Monarch's soldiers led by Power Ring. Kyle manages to beat them and finds a safe place to hide Ray. Ray tells him what this "great disaster" is about. Kyle and Ray meet up with Donna. They manage to find Jason, now in the Red Robin guise, and the Earth-51 Batm an. They are attacked by a group of Monarch's men. Ultraman kills the Earth-51 Batman. The Challengers meet the Earth-51 Monitor who teleports them to Apokolips after Donna sees a message from the Source that reads "To Apokolips". The Challengers arrive on Apokolips where Ray Palmer says he's not sure why they're there. As they come up with a strategy, Jason abandons the group and heads off on his own. Kyle, Donna, and Ray see a giant lightning bolt and soon after, meet up with the newly empowered Mary Marvel, and Harly and Holly.

Corps Honor Guard

After the war, Kyle and Guy were in charge of cleaning up New York, then the Guardians explained to Kyle that he was never supposed to be the permanent host for Ion, only that the power of the Starheart Jade gave him enabled him to be the temporary host. Once he gave the new Ion, Sodam Yat, some pointers Kyle revealed to the others that him and Guy were now Corps Honor Guard partners. Soon after though, he discovered that he needed a change of scenery. Guy felt the same way so the two of them decided to move to Oa and open up a new Warriors bar. Kyle put up the painting his mom had painted, that had helped him during the war, in his new home.

However, they did not have much time to get cozy on Oa because Kyle and Guy had to lead a team to the Vega System to stop Sinestro Corps rings from finding new bearers. Kyle and Guy proved to be a good team when they rescued Sodam Yat and Arisia from the clutches of Mongul though they did lose Lantern Bzzd in the battle.

Kyle and Guy opened the new Warriors bar and after the opening night, Kyle and Guy discussed the future of the bar, while Kyle sketched on a piece of paper. Kyle apparently was not happy with his doodle and chucked it in the trash, leaving for the day. Guy checked the paper and looked at it. It was of a Green Lantern wounded and bleeding, meaning Kyle may be having post traumatic stress disorder. Kyle was next seen hanging out with Kilowog and other lanterns, even flirting with Soranik Natu just before eyes of rookie Lantern families rained down from the skies. After some time of flirting Kyle and Soranik began dating and soon found out by a Star Sapphire that they are each others true love. Although it was later revealed that Kyle lied.

 Bring it on!

The first Green Lantern shown in the DC Animated Universe was a hybrid between Kyle and Hal Jordan  but had the name Kyle Rayner. He first appeared in the Superman  animated series in a standard Green Lantern suit but returned in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited in his more defined costume. In this series he was not the last Green Lantern or the Torchbearer, but he did spend a majority of his time in space or on Oa. In the series he was said to have been trained by Katma Tui. He appeared in the S:TAS episode "In Brightest Day" voiced by Michael P. Greco and the JLU episode "The Return" voiced by Will Friedle. He also appeared in the JL episode "Hereafter" as a mourner, but he did not speak. He was mentioned in the JL episode "Hearts and Minds".

The Future

Quite what the future has in store for Kyle is unknown, currently as Parallax he is a formidable adversary to the Green Lantern Corps  and has great power at his command. He is now responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Green Lanterns and the capture of Hal Jordan , Guy Gardner  and John Stewart . Although he has overcome parallax with the help of Hal Jordan and helped End the Sinestro Corps War. After the war he began dating  Soranik Natu behind the Gardians back because of one of their new laws. And if history is correct and does repeat it self then Soranik could die soon.

All We do know that the future is dark for the Green Lanterns, and we have seen that there maybe more going on in the universe than even the Guardians know about.
