Ashrah was a demon in service to Quan Chi in the Netherrealm. Exiled for showing mercy, she found a magical sword, which purifies her with every demon she kills with it. After defeating Noob Saibot, she finally earned her ascension from the Netherrealm.

Liu Kang is a Shaolin monk that follows the teachings of the Shaolin White Lotus Society. He's also the protegé of Raiden, and fights alongside his fellow Shaolin companion Kung Lao and the forces of Light. He is romantically involved with the princess of Edenia, Kitana.
Bi-Han is Noob Saibot, an evil wraith who was once the original Sub-Zero before being murdered by Scorpion. He is also a member of the Brotherhood of the Shadow, which worships a fallen Elder God named Shinnok.
Quan Chi is likely the most sinister character in the Mortal Kombat universe. A powerful sorcerer and demon from the Netherrealm, Quan Chi is a master manipulator. He is responsible for killing Scorpion's family, and blaming it on the original Sub-Zero, causing the two ninjas to murder each other. He then would resurrect them both as wraiths to serve him in hell. Quan Chi himself serves the fallen Elder God Shinnok, but not without having a hidden agenda of his own.
Raiden is the eternal God of Thunder and former protector of Earthrealm. After the second defeat of Shinnok, he ascended to the status of Elder God. As a god, he is used to thinking in terms of eternity rather than normal human life spans.
Shujinko is the protagonist of Mortal Kombat Deception. He goes through a quest to search for six powerful amulets (Kamidogu), but is deceived by the Dragon King, Onaga. Shujinko used his powers that which he received from the Dragon King himself, and was able to undo the menace that was started by his own hands. Shujinko had indeed defeated Onaga, only to be killed with every other warrior in the final battle of Armageddon.
Smoke appears as a hidden assassin of Shao Kahn in Malibu Comics series Battlewave. Smoke is greatly different from his game's counterpart mortal kombat.
Kuai Liang is Sub-Zero, a half American, half Chinese warrior who, belongs to the ancient Outworld race known as the Cryomancers. The original Sub-Zero was Kuai Liang's older brother and an assassin for the Lin Kuei , but then was murdered, by Scorpion. Kuai Liang took the name Sub-Zero. Kuai Liang himself, is an honorable man and is, one of Earthrealms most valuable, defenders.
