Kozo Fuyutsuki

Manga Biography

Volume 1

He is Gendo’s right-hand man, seen standing by his shoulder at almost all times. Unlike his commander, Fuyutsuki seems to show a little more empathy for the pilots – after Rei’s battle with the Third Angel, he states that there are no more pilots for the Eva. He was not aware at the time that Shinji had already arrived, however later he questions Gendo when he asks that Rei pilot in her critical condition. Despite the age-gap between the two, Fuyutsuki seems to hold Gendo with respect.

Volume 2

Fuyutsuki mentions that the use of munitions against the Fourth Angel is just a waste of the taxpayer’s money.

Volume 3

He is on-site with Gendo at the location of the Fourth Angel’s death. Similarly, he is present at the reactivation test of Unit 00. Fuyutsuki is also the one to receive notification of the Fifth Angel, and informs Gendo of this. After Misato acquires a positron rifle from the JSSDF in order to fight the Fifth Angel, he and Gendo voice their amazement that she was able to actually get it.

Volume 4

Neither he or Gendo are pleased with Shinji and Asuka’s performance against the Seventh Angel. He is again at Gendo’s side in the second battle with the Seventh Angel, and appears much happier with this second result.

Volume 5

Fuyutsuki is down at the Sought Pole with Gendo Ikari. He considers Second Impact to have been the result of mankind’s arrogance in its power, and the destruction of to be a punishment too great to bear. His purpose for being at the South Pole was to accompany Gendo while he retrieved a large spear.

He is later seen in Shinji’s flashback to the day his mother disappeared.

Volume 6

Fuyutsuki receives a call that says the Nevada Branch in vanished without a trace. Later, he talks to Gendo about the incident and wonders what SEELE’s next plans could be. He is present during the Eva 03 angel battle (labelled the Eighth Angel), ordering for Shinji’s synch ratio to be cut when it appears he is losing. Gendo overrides this order.

Volume 7

He is on the bridge overseeing the attempted force-ejection of Shinji from Eva 01. During the battle with the Ninth Angel, Fuyutsuki asks Ikari if his plan was for Eva 01 to eat the Ninth Angel’s S2 engine. Afterwards, meeting with Kaji alongside Gendo, he states that the incident was an accident.

Volume 8

Soon after Shinji returns from the Eva, Fuyutsuki is seen wandering the halls wondering why Gendo hasn’t seen his son yet. He is soon abducted by Ryoji Kaji and interrogated by SEELE, with food and water kept from him.

In flashbacks, Fuyutsuki recalls being Yui Ikari’s teacher prior to Second Impact. He posts bail for Gendo Rokubungi after he is involved in a drunken brawl, but doesn’t agree with Yui’s relationship with him. He distrusts Gendo and SEELE in 2002, after Second Impact, believing his presence on the team investigating the occurrence is merely to add credibility to the team’s findings. Fuyutsuki disbelieves the official story and seeks to find out the truth about Second Impact. After uncovering it, he confronts Ikari directly and blames both him and SEELE for creating the Second Impact.

After being introduced to the Evangelion proto-type, Unit 00, Fuyutsuki joins Gehirn. By the time of Yui’s contact experiment with Eva 00, he seems to have become more friendly with Gendo. Fuyutsuki seems to also have become a confidant of sorts for Gendo around this time.

Fuyutsuki is set free by Ryoji Kaji, and is confused by his responsibility for both his abduction and rescue. He warns Kaji that SEELE will kill him for his actions.

Volume 9

When Gendo tries to use the Lance of Longinus in the battle with the Tenth Angel, he cautions him against using it. After it’s been thrown by Eva 00, he enquires as to whether it can be retrieved but is told that it’s impossible. Fuyutsuki attends Kaworu’s trial synch test, and questions the veracity of the data. He is later present beside Gendo during the battle against the Eleventh Angel.

Volume 10

Standing beside Gendo, he is stunned when Rei self-destructs Eva 00 to defeat the Eleventh Angel. He later asks Gendo if he’s aware SEELE will want to know why Rei is alive after the Eva self-destructed.

Volume 11

Fuyutsuki calls for all passages leading to Central Dogma to be closed during the attack of the last angel. He is surprised that SEELE sent the final angel to them directly.

He tells Gendo later that SEELE was impatient and seems to believe Shinji did well in preventing SEELE’s attack with Kaworu.

During the invasion of NERV, Fuyutsuki is on the bridge attempting to hold the situation together.

Volume 12

He is surprised that SEELE has ordered the use of the S2 equipped Eva units to fight the reawakened Eva 02.
