I'm surprised nobody has ever asked this. I mean does he looks like a black kiwi? It sounds like a unique name, but at the same time it sounds random. They never did explain why that is his mutant name. Do you guys have any idea why his name is Kiwi Black?

Its because the country he comes from, being referred to a Kiwi is like how some Australians are referred to as Aussies, American's Yankee''s, Canadian's Canuck's, and Irish Drunks... then black is like the national colour of the country he comes from, most of the sports team have black in the name, so two and two.  
 
So imagine a character like Red, White and Blue Yankee, the Green and Gold Aussie, etc etc etc  
 
So I suppose the writer was trying to take a bit of the country's culture into consideration.....
