Exactly.  She was threatened by the Junior team.  Two of the New Mutants were older than her, but she didn't want to be demoted from the X-Men into the "X-Babies".  She'd already saved the world numberous times, and faced villains that were considered too dangerous for the New Mutants.  She considered herself to be an X-Man and over-reacted when the Professor announced that she was to join the New Mutants (Uncanny X-Men #167 & #168).  So her attitude alientated her from her own age-group in the mansion.

It didn't last though.  The New Mutants went to the Massachusetts Academy to save her (New Mutants #15 to #17).  Kitty worked with the New Mutants to help free Magma & Sunspot from the Gladiators (New Mutants #30 & #31).  The New Mutants battled demons to save Kitty's soul (New Mutants #36), and she even socialised with them during a school dance at Salem Center High School, which led to the tragic suicide of Larry Bodine (New Mutants #45).  In fact, that issue was more about Kitty than the New Mutants, but it did show how close she was to Rahne, Sam & Dani.  It was Sam & Dani who accompanied Kitty to Larry's memorial assembly, and told her that they would support her if she 'outed' them as mutants.

Lockheed often hung around the New Mutants (especially Illyana) when Kitty wasn't in the mansion :)

Colossus was still a teenager when Kitty joined the X-Men.  They didn't even date at first, let alone sleep together.  In fact, their relationship hit the rocks when he slept with an alien woman.  Kitty & Colossus didn't get together until years and years later.

If you're referring to Pete Wisdom, she wasn't 16 and she was old enough to have a relationship with an older man by then.  She'd been with the X-Men and Excalibur for several years.  Even considering Marvel's stupid sliding time scale, she wouldn't have been 16 by then.  She wouldn't even have been considered a minor, and it was only Claremont de-aging her in X-Treme X-Men that made her young enough to go to college.  And as we all know, Claremont is trapped in the past and refuses to let Kitty grow up.

So she ISN'T a slut!  Derogatory terms like that shouldn't be thrown around casually like this.  Especailly for someone who in 29 years of publishing can count the amount of sexual partners on one hand... with fingers to spare!

You mean "floozy", but you're wrong.  She was 16 in 1980.  She had a relationship with Pete Wisdom in the 90's.  She didn't sleep with Colossus until Astonishing X-Men... She entered into long term relationships when she was old enough.  She never went into bars for one-night stands with strangers.

This behaviour doesn't make her a slut, a floozy or promiscuous.  It makes her a perfectly normal human being.  She isn't Stacy X, Namorita, Tigra or She-Hulk.  Like I said before, Kitty Pryde can count the men she's slept with on one hand with plenty of fingers left over.

Yeah, I understand why the New Mutants didn't like her at first, but Kitty's opinion was that she'd worked hard to be a REAL X-Man, sne she was being demoted to the newer team not because of anything she'd done, but simply because of her age. The girl had spent her 14th birthday in space, infected by a Brood egg and knowing she could die, and yet she held it together and did her part as a member of the team. Then...after all that...she returns to be told she wasn't going to be an X-Man anymore!

As noted, she and the New Mutants buried the hatchet pretty quickly (15-17 above) and in the end, I think it's fair to say that Xian (Karma) was one of her best friends.

All and all, I'd say that the way Chris handled the situation was pretty interesting. The tension between the "X-Babies" and Kitty made sense.

Kitty became Karma's unrequited love interest when they were in college.  So it was a bit too late to call Karma a New Mutant by then ;)

But the other New Mutants had already proved themselves too.  They'd fought off the Brood, and members of the Hellfire Club.  Kitty had a few years worth of comics ahead of them, but with Marvel's stupid stupid sliding timescale, that was only a few months of extra experience.  Basically, Claremont tried to come up with reasons why his favourite little X-Girl shouldn't join the junior team ;)

Lockheed's currently in the Pet Avengers, trying not to leave any more team-mates behind.

Joss Whedon...and though not a bad story, I want her back in the X-Men badly. Heck, I want her SOMEWHERE! If the Guardians of the Galaxy were to rescue her, I'd be happy to see her join THEM till she could get back to Earth! I want to see her return to Earth and marry Peter. I want her to have the chance to have babies...and NOT have those kids die, be kidnapped or turn out to be imaginary.

I want her...to be happy. I don't think that's too much, is it? To allow some member of the X-Men to be happy? Knowing that she could be dead is depressing. Still...at least I've still got Wolverine : First Class. She's been in most every issue so far.

Yeah...I know. You know what hurts worse? Though I know it wont last long, the mutants have actually been able to let there hair down in San Francisco. For the most part, they've been accepted by the locals, and while the battle against the Skrulls in New York turned into a gigantic mess for the Avenger-inspired teams, with massive devistation and loss of life...the X-men not only kept Frisco safe AND the death toll low (with superior teamwork and nobody attacking each other), they GOT THE CREDIT FOR IT and had the chance to look like heroes in the public eye! The California-based Iniaitive team (The Order, is it?) never raised a peep while the Skrulls rampaged, and the X-Men got all the glory. They even had the chance to parade in the street to cheering crowds...

And...Kitty didn't get a taste of that. By the time she gets back, I fear that Peter's going to have a girlfriend or something, and the acceptance of San Francisco will be a distant memory. I for one hope that they STAY in Frisco, and that they have years of acceptance and safety the area. It wont happen, of course. Nobody seems to like the X-Men when they aren't running for their lives from a crowd of Government-funded hate groups.

But me...I'm just fine with them having the chance to be accepted. Can't they just be hated everywhere else, but beloved in San Francisco? Is it wrong to hope that happiness comes their way...just for a while?

You never actually see Kitty with the New Mutants until the time when Magma had joined the team.  Kitty was never shown interacting with the New Mutants nor insulting them to their faces.  A lot of Uncanny X-Men #168 was spent with Kitty trying to prove herself as an X-Man... there was a disappointing lack of New Mutants.  So Claremont set up this hatred between Kitty & the Muties without actually showing it, which always felt a bit odd.
