Millar Delivers a Delightfully Twisted Package With Kick Ass
I think everyone would agree that Mark Millar is one of top writers in comic books today. If I see his name on the cover, I assume its worth a read. I picked this particular comic book up on a friend's recommendation and I was quite impressed. Kick Ass tells the story of two regular guys who want to be crime fighters. We've seen many takes on the flaws of vigilante justice, especially in recent years with the Civil War and the even more recent screen adaptation of Watchmen. What Millar does very well with this title is he takes that idea and applies absurd dark humor through ridiculous violence and quirky dialogue. The story in this particular issue revolves around the vicious crime fighting father-daughter duo, Big Daddy and Hit-Girl. A man turning his daughter into a cold blooded assassin is far from heart-warming, but if you can suspend belief, its disturbingly hilarious. The Millar's writing presents the wild ideas in a self aware manner that allow you to enjoy what he is obviously enjoying himself. Comic book fans will enjoy his spoofs of the typical crime fighter cliches and how they guide the wanna-be heroes, particularly our main protagonists, the pathetic Kick Ass and the usually stoned Red Mist.
As usual John Romita Jr brings us beautiful pencilling and Dean White's coloring really brings the story to life with almost cinematic tones. Its no wonder that this is on its way to the big screen as this is the type of disastrous fun that people want to see. Keep in mind that this is not for everyone. Its violent, profane and irreverent, so keep your little brother or sister away from it til they're in about the 8th grade or so. Everyone else should definitely read this one
