@zombietag: One group of people isn't everyone but I see your point. I'm just saying that his isn't something nerds get on TV all to often to attacking it after one episode isn't helping. If it's either this or more Big Bang Theory, I'd take this.
well obviously i dont feel that way just because of that group, im just saying that i dont think itll appeal to non comic fans either. but im with ya on this over big bang theory, i hate that show
I find it odd that people didn't like it even though they did not completely watch the entire episode, or they had a predisposition towards Kevin Smith (who no matter what you think of him is a f@cking genius...who else has made a hit for 25k) that being said , I found the humor funny and laughed pretty much all the way through the show, I think the format was pretty slick and if it has any resplendence to "pawn stars" or "Amer. Pickers" were quickly lost - maybe they could simply talk about comic books (I have 50 boxes in my collection) but then some folks would say they are only talking about comics (and this would leave some on the outside) as for me I'll watch it, I love this stuff, Breathe it, Eat it , even Sh!t it. anything to promote "Geekdon" in General works for me. More Power to the "Comic Book Men"!!!!!!
I really enjoyed the show actually. I found the people pretty funny and interesting. Also, the podcasting was pretty entertaining. Almost wanted to interject lol. :P
What if AMC instead made another Mad Men style drama about the comic book industry? It would be completely unfounded in fact but the idea of a character like Don Draper smoking, sipping whiskey, and pitching the newest arc of Batman is too awesome and hilarious to pass up.
@zombietag: I actually think its bearable but not for the reasons some marketing team thinks so. I hope, if anything, this show could get more people into comics who maybe are seeing The Avengers film, maybe borderline cases.
There used to be these two guys on youtube who would review comics or do some sort of editorial thing on the state of the industry. It was entertaining. As for a themed show, that would be great. But (again) for some reason people like this reality show stuff. It's boring to me, so...
As you described it, Television is for the "main stream" of the world audience. There are few shows that cater to specific taste like our own but even those that claim they were made for "fans" per say usually aren't and only use that as a way to advertise the show making those outside of the fandom feel like they're able to see in to why fans take interest in a particular topic be it movies, video games, or comics.
But still, as far as fans like us are concerned I just don't think TV is for us anymore. We've got the internet.
I wasn't a fan. I thought all of the characters were pretty unlikable or obnoxious, and the things that I was interested in like comic-book history (I really wanted to hear them go more into the history of drugs and comics) were pretty much just mentioned and then skipped over. I'll watch the next episode to see what kind of cool stuff people bring in--but if certain things don't change I will definitely be making room on my DVR by deleting it.
I'll admit, I didn't watch past the opening credits. The teaser gave me too much of a Big Bang Theory vibe. They weren't making any sort of witty jokes about geek culture, the fact that they were geeks was meant to be the punchline in and of itself.
I didn't like it. Once they started to talk about which super hero they would hook up with I was bored. I watched about half the show and quit. It felt like it was giving comic geeks a bad name in the community.
I'm kind of surprised to see how many people were treating this show as some kind of "it" show. That just because it's set in a comic shop, that it would be the representation of all fandom. That to me is kind of unrealistic. I don't watch CSI and expect it to actually represent law enforcement. While it's a reality show, not a scripted drama, both types of shows have things presented to you. No reality show is just flipping on the webcam to see what they are doing.
I listen to the Tell 'Em SteveDave podcast, so what I was expecting is what I got, Walt Bry and Ming on the screen. When they said they were going to Colinswood, I was hyped, as trips to Colinswood are legendary podcasts. I enjoyed it and can't wait to see the next five.
I really liked it,as a huge tell em Steve dave fan this program is a great accompaniment.people moaning they don't portray real comic fandom need to understand they are comic book fans an have run the store for many years. Your dismissal and quick to insult and judge is the problem not 3 married men all close friends in a reality program about their store!
I have been using this site a long time and I still have yet to watch a podcast. More than likely I would just tune it out. Never been interested in hearing who wants to hook up with what super hero/villain and why.
I am a fan grrrl, and I really liked it. Have always liked Kevin, and was happy for this opportunity to get to know more about Walt and Bryan. LOVE Walt. I enjoy Pawn Stars, so having a show about comics that is partially formatted like Pawn Stars is right up my alley, especially since I have a room full of action figures, toys, comics, posters and autographs.
I missed it, though my first introduction to this was Kevin in an interview with Kevin on Attack Of The Show today. He seemed very, forthcoming, and kind of funny. Really laid back too about it. Actually I think he was high. He was talking about smoking pot a little. Actually, I think that's all he really talked about? Oh, and masturbating to online porn in great detail. Seriously. I'm attracted to the content but I'm turned off by the low brow humor he was presenting, though if my observation stands he really didn't even focus on the presentation as he was wasted. I won't rush to see this, but might give it a chance if there's nothing else.
I recently watched the first episode and Bryan (the bearded guy) is an absolute A-hole and a waste of skin!! Throwing action figures off the table on the ground scratching up the bubble, wtf? Idk if it's cause they said the box was full of "freebies" and he just doesn't respect the products since he nor the store didn't buy them or what, but the word freebies then making money seems a little shady, especially if vendors and/or company are supplying them to the store then the store resells them. Slapping the Speed Racer box in Ming's hand as he's trying to sell it, breaking the plates was just over the top rude, insecure, obnoxious and in need of a good ole' fashioned @$$ whipping!! Even after taking the easy way out and selling the whole table's items, the other guy stays and tries to sell items then eventually sells his renaming items and making enough money to put him over the top and he wins but Bryan basically gets all butt hurt and is noticeably upset like a B!tch, sore loser. Btw, If I went into a place of business and a non-employee interrupted one my transaction's with a real employee I would just tell them to stay the "F"out of it!! Really enjoyed Kevin Smith movies and what not but this guy, seriously? Come to the mid-west and treat someone like that and see what happens.
Sorry, I'm late to the party. But let the invocation begin:
Hi, I'm new to ComicVine(CV). I only recently found out about Comic Book Men on AMC. I was there in Red Bank for this other even and thought I would check out the store. It was only after my video did I find out about Comic Book Men.
I loved the store and the show. I don't watch much television, but I enjoy the interaction of the group. And sure it has to be scripted, I don't mind, real life isn't that interesting to be taped for an entire season. I mean who's going to sit around and listen to people speak about CV's Battle Thread? Well, me that's who. But I, as much as the esteemed gentlemen who contribute to this site, are in the minority. Dr.Strange Vs. Harry Potter. Hell yes! I read the whole thing - and enjoyed every second! It's actually one of the things that finally made me sign up. That, and Comic Book Men. It really made me want to get involved in the forums, and talk about comics again. Even if you don't like Kevin Smith, Comic Book Men, or his podcasts the store is beautiful. If you can't make it to Jersey, I made a vid of my trip to the store. Don't worry I only talk in the beginning. ;)
