Kelly Sue DeConnick was born in Ohio in 1970. Her father served in the United States Air Force, and in typical military family fashion, DeConnick spent most of her childhood moving from base to base. While stationed in Germany with few German language skills, and not much else in the way of entertainment options, she began a lifelong love of American comics. She cites Wonder Woman and Vampirella as some of her earliest reads.

DeConnick graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1993 with a Bachelors Degree in Drama. Though she eventually decided against a career in the dramatic arts, she has since recognized that her training as an actor informed her writing style, with a heavy concentration on dialogue.

With the recommendation of Editor Jamie S. Rich, DeConnick began working for Tokyopop, editing and adapting many of their manga series into English. She eventually segued into American comics, co writing 30 Days of Night: Eben & Stella with Steve Niles, and authoring several of the short stories in Tori Amos' anthology, Comic Book Tattoo.

DeConnick has always been an active internet journalist, having cut her teeth writing for Sequential Tart and artbomb.net. She currently keeps an active internet presence with accounts on Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook and Google+.

She currently lives in Portland Oregon with her husband and fellow writer Matt Fraction and their two children Tallulah Louise and Henry Leo.
