So... What you're saying is that black people exist, but gay people don't.

Seriously, there is no-one that would start to buy a comic because they'd found out that Karma is gay. She's been side-lined ever since the start of the New Mutants. Having minor characters come out of the closet doesn't boost sales. It's just an attempt to reflect society, but without daring to do it with the mainstream or popular heroes.

You said that having homosexuals in comics is just an "unneeded sales ploy." If we're getting rid of all sales ploys then we should take out all ethnicities, because they were obviously only put in there so that they could appeal to a broader audience.
