Not a whole lot of information has leaked about the potential Justice League movie, but tonight Latino Review posted a veeeeeeeeeery interesting exclusive.  According to the site, Darkseid will serve as the Justice League's threat in the first movie.

"KNEEL BEFORE DARKSEID," says Warner Bros. to Marvel Studios.
Naturally, this is a move that's going to stir up some Marvel vs DC movies controversy. For one, do I need to even draw Thanos comparisons? Yes, yes... Darkseid appeared in the comics before Thanos (1970 vs 1973), but I'm willing to bet a rather huge percentage of general moviegoers don't know that.

I can understand how this is a logical choice for the studio, though. Darkseid served as the foe in The New 52's first JUSTICE LEAGUE story and, as expected, the title didn't do too shabby with sales.  The six issue arc also showcased how the characters joined forces. To me, it seems like a safe bet the film will be inspired by Geoff Johns' story. You know, assuming this reveal actually pans out.

Viners, what do you think about this? Are you happy with the selection or would you rather see a different villain picked for the big screen?

They're moving way to fast. Marvel at least chose to save they're big villain (Thanos) for the sequel but if DC uses Darkseid in the first JL movie, who are they supposed to use in they're sequel?

So it'll be pretty much the exact same plot as Avengers.

    Surely this won't backfire.

    Surely.

It's what I assumed all along. The problem with trying to do Starro is you can't exactly have an intergalactic starfish with mind control powers as the main bad guy in a movie and expect people to take it seriously, at least not without drastically changing his look. On the other hand, by drastically changing Starro's look you run the risk of making a 'Galactus Fail' like Rise of the Silver Surfer showed us. Nah, I'm afraid Darkseid is the only logical way to go with this.

@RedheadedAtrocitus Darkseid is far from the only logical way to go. There are a many great villians through the history of the league that would work fine on screen with minimal changes. Using Darkseid is just being lazy. Not a great sign.

Once Thanos arrives mainstream and is established in the Avengers 2 movie, then we would prob never see Darkseid on the big screen for future movies. So Id rather see a head-to-head match Marvel and DC, then to never see him at all

Apokolips mythology and the great number of evil gods is more than enough for making 3 movies. This can also be a good opportunity to introduce the New Gods for a future Orion movie which can easily compete with the Thor movies.

As someone who has just begun reading comics (DC's New 52 and Justice League #1) I think starting with Darkseid is their best option. No one else to the general fans won't know anyone else. And if I'm being honest here, when I saw The Avengers and Thanos appeared, I had no idea who he was. Building up to a major villain does not always translate to the general public, maybe DC knows that. If they get the right script and cast the right people starting the DC Movie-verse with The Justice League (maybe Man of Steel) is the best way for them to draw interest (with the general movie goer crowd) in to solo movies for the rest of the members.

Well with the route DC wants to go with making their movie characters more relatable, Darkseid may not be the best choice. He seems way to far from reality to use on film, for the first film anyways. I feel like Vandal Savage would be a better choice for going against the league.

I would like to see the movie about the justice league. To me they are the biggest threat because they are so powerful. This was done flawlessy in JL cartoon as they went up against project cadmus who saw the JL as the real threat to humanity. It is such an interesting take on superheros. No you wont see that much action but i would sacrafice action for drama any day. Its no secrete that they are seen as a pantheon of gods to us mortals

I dont even think a Justice League movie is a good idea in the first place. It really is obvious that the film serves as an opponent to Marvel's Avengers. And im a DC guy, but we have just finished an amazing trilogy with Batman, THAT SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FUTURE JL MOVIE. then we have Man of Steel coming up which looks really interesting, but i dont know how i would feel about that connecting either especially since Nolan is a producer on that project. To me its too obvious that DC wants to compete with Marvel and im afraid we are going to suffer through piss poor rushed movies only for Marvel to keep on trucking with Summer blockbusters.

But to the matter at hand, if they are going to make Darkseid the villain, and possibly base it off the Geoff Johns story, then i guess that woulndt be too bad. I know Thanos was seen at the end of the Avengers, but i dont think that DC is trying to steal that from Marvel. Darkseid has always been a huge threat to the DC universe, and has battled the JLA on multiple occasions, espically recently. But that does pose a problem, though i think their intentions are to make a good villain present, not only will it be similiar to Thanos, it will be similiar to the recent Avengers movie. Alien invasions, are a little similiar to extra dimensional invaders. But all things considered, as long as they dont make solo movies to hype up a team up or focus too much on origins, then they have a shot. DC is too late in the game to ttry and establish individual stories. I just hope the company is looking through the eyes of the fans and not through dollar signs

Latino Review just makes educated speculations and more often than not, they're correct. Anyone with a brain stem could see that Darkseid would most likely be the most viable candidate for the League's first showdown.

Well to be honest there were two serious options to go along with the movie, it was a white martian invasion or it was Darkseid.

White martian invasion would make it appear like The Avengers, so ti was obvious to choose Darkseid.

And since they have chosen Darkseid I guess there will be no Martian Manhunter in this movie :(

I think Darkseid as the main villain would be a fantastic idea. Brainiac is a good choice too after what I've read so far of DC Universe Online (the comic book), but I don't think Starro would work, unless they make it really believable with a great storyline and select few changes. Someone like Amazo would only work after the league has been established for a while. If this is going to be an origin story, they can't fight a superpowered unbeatable-ish robot built specifically to take the Justice League down.

As much as I'd love to see the Justice League fight a team of villains like the Legion of Doom or the Society, I very much doubt a live action movie with that large an ensemble cast could work or is even a possibility to begin with. However, the Justice League crossing parallel worlds and fighting the Crime Syndicate would be great if the same actors could play both roles (eg. Henry Cavill as both Superman and Ultraman, etc).

One thing I do personally hope they do is leave room in the Justice League movie for the possibility of a Teen Titans movie. It doesn't need a cameo by Robin or Dick Grayson or anything, but just don't directly state that there's a Batman but no sidekick Robin, or that Wonder Woman is an only child with no little sister, or that the Flash doesn't have a nephew or sidekick.

Yes! Braniac definitely has my vote for the first major villain. Braniac's army of robots will lead to way more chaos and mayhem than Darkseid by himself [no matter how cool he is], anyways. And, more big battle sequences = more repeat attendance = a bigger revenue for the next JL movie [potentially something along the lines of Crisis on Two Earths. Marvel can't touch that one]!

I think Darkseid would be a better fit for a Superman or Superman/Batman [maybe Wonder Woman too] crossover, especially if Supergirl is involved in the plot, to avoid Thanos comparisons at ALL costs.

I'm really not liking the sound of this movie. And I really hope they don't base it off Geoff Johns's opening arc on New 52 Justice League. I thought that was really lackluster.

I'm afraid that if WB does send in ol' stoneface, the general public will assume it's just a ripoff of the Avengers.

It might be better to get some major villains together like Brainiac, Luthor, Circe etc. This would help vary the action a bit and keep the heroes guessing where the next threat will come from.

this idea is stupid. we dont know jack about their universe. we dont know what is normal or not. and they just throw dc's biggest baddie at us and expect us to be cool with it. give us some backstory, something to go on. the universe is 100% NOT like the comic one.

Huh? What backstory do you want? Don't you think you're being a little ridiculous?

You didn't need any back story for green goblin in spiderman 1.

you also didnt need any back story for scarecrow in batman 1.

neither did you need any back story for loki in thor.

there also wouldn't be any back story for thanos in avengers 2.

So whats the difference? You want some back story? try wikipedia

Methinks whoever the villain in the next Superman movie is should be the villain in the JLA movie plus his cohorts. That way, the villain will have a background story and not someone who came out of nowhere.

and why do you need a villain with a back story? Can't it be told in the film?
