    Let's pause for a few seconds to think back to how great Justice League Unlimited was. If you've been waiting for a high definition version for your personal collection, that time has just about arrived. Warner Archive Collection is released Justice League Unlimited: The Complete Series on Blu-ray for the first time in a full 16x9 widescreen presentation Tuesday, November 10, 2015.

    The series was a follow up to the Justice League series and ran from 2004-2006. Instead of just having a core team, it featured a huge collection of characters from the DC library. The original seven members were joined by heroes such as Green Arrow, Supergirl, Black Canary, and more. Besides all the villains in the DCU, they also had their hands full with Lex Luthor and the legion of Doom.

    The cast featured Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series) as Batman, George Newbern (Scandal) as Superman, Susan Eisenberg (Justice League) as Wonder Woman, Michael Rosenbaum (Impastor, Smallville) as Flash, Carl Lumbly (Alias) as J’onn J’onzz, Phil LaMarr (Futurama, Pulp Fiction) as Green Lantern and Maria Canals-Barrera (Wizards of Waverly Place, Cristela) as Hawkgirl.

    Special features on Justice League Unlimited: The Complete Series include:

    • Creator’s Commentary on the episodes “This Little Piggy” and “The Return”;
    • “And Justice for All”: a featurette on the process of revamping the series with new characters and a new creative direction;
    • “Cadmus Exposed”: Mark Hamill and series creative personnel discuss this popular series story arc;
    • “Justice League Chronicles”: The series’ writers, producers and directors discuss their favorite moments among final season episodes.

    Who's going to pick it up this week?

    How would they be able to switch it to 16 x 9 though? Its not like we're talking about live action sitcoms, which were usually filmed in widescreen and then cut down to fit the size of old standard TVs. There's no raw widescreen footage of the animation cells. Unless they're just cropping/resizing the image in which case... ick.

    The show was actually animated in 16x9 and the sides were cut down to fit the size of old standard TVs from the second season of Justice League onwards. That's why the JL season 1 blu-ray is pillarboxed while the season 2 and JLU blu-rays are 16x9 widescreen.

    I always loved the commentary on the JL DVDs. Listening to Bruce Timm, Paul Dinni, Andrea Romano and all the other great creators and cast was really cool and insightful.

    Are you serious? That's so bizarre! Why animate a show in an aspect ratio that they had no way of knowing it would ever be seen in? There are probably background details like extra characters off on the far left and right that were fully animated but never actually seen by the public because they were cut off in the transition to "standard" tv size.

    Neat bit of trivia. Thanks :)

    The already released DVDs are in 16:9 format, what you gain is better resolution and no interlace.

    AFAIK and IIRC, the first Season (JL not unlimited) actually had a 16:9 layout (how it was meant to be viewed) but was animated for a 4:3 ratio (standard at the time) and was cropped to widescreen later. The layout was done in 16:9 so that when they cropped down the 4:3 frame to the 16:9 ratio no important detail was lost, but technically for season 1 of JL full frame has the most animation detail.

    The later seasons JL S2, JLU1&2 were all animated in 16:9 and released on DVD in widescreen (even says so on the DVD), so I don't know what this article claiming. I also believe that the JLU seasons might have actually aired in 16:9, which might depend on country and channel.

    Also, filming in widescreen is not a new for television, for example Babylon 5 (1994) series was shot in widescreen with the expectation that it was the direction of television technology. They did the cgi in full frame as they though that they would be able to redo the cgi shots as it would be cheaper in the future. They never redid the cgi though.
