AQUAMAN is one of my favorite Superheroes, I think he's basically the ultimate human. Keep in mind that earth is mostly water. I often let my imagination run. Picture Batman in an 'open water' scenario...I don't care how bad ass he is in Gotham, in open water Batman and many other heroes would die!! This includes others like Wolverine, Spider-Man, Punisher, Daredevil, and many others. Hell, in a Waterworld scenario even heavy hitters would have to seriously adapt. SUPERMAN, WW. There is something to be said of a race of people that can comfortably live with the effects of salt water, live in the deep trenches and for AQ even have an established communication with the ocean wild life. The oceans is also an ultimate frontier of which many writers lack the imagination to use it effectively because they lack the proper perspective and research. On this end I commend Geoff Johns, he's doing a great job with AQ. I've also always been fascinated by the sea so I can appreciate a well written AQ series. I recommend the following to get a perspective of the amazing Kingdome AQ rules over: The current AQUAMAN series (duh!), the film Open Water and OW II, the film Jaws, the book In Harm's Way, the documentary Deep Sea, the film The Abyss. Bottom line AQ can be the ultimate bad ass in water or in the surface!

Your criterion for deciding a definitive "best character" from a group as diverse as the Justice League ---- a range of people spanning everything from men to aliens to gods to abstract beings ---- is "must be able to comfortably live underwater"?

Aquaman is the best at what he does, and if anyone watched or read Flashpoint series then you'll know how awesome he's capable of. Your right about him putting the other characters in a situation where water will be their disadvantage, but just saying that "Aquaman is the best leaguer because of his water abilities and that he can do things that no body can do" is just undermining everybody else, with the right abilities and tactical thinking they can take him down just as easily (for example, Sup's can just fly down underwater, grab Aquaman, and super speed him into an unknown desert area). The thing I like about superheroes is that no matter how powerful they are there not always invincible in some areas.

@citizenbane: @ Nerd of a hero too... yes allow me to elaborate. First off I didn't say AQ is the most powerful leaguer. I said he is 'one of my favorites'. Because he is basically the ultimate human.

Smarts: yes, AQ is a very smart, tactical warrior and versed in politics of the royal kind, he rules an entire nation that is underwater. That takes being level headed, diplomatic and able to make tough decisions that affect other's lives. Not that he cares for such things but he is also basically mega wealthy (more than BW or TS) and can command an entire army. He is also an integral part of the DC universe's premier protectors, plays well with others obviously and has more than capable leadership abilities.

IS HE TOUGH? Powers: well he is strong enough to rumble in hand to hand combat with WW and Supes, he is bullet proof, can throw around submarines and line cruisers, has enhanced senses- eyesight, hearing and smell. Is immune to extreme weathers, can withstand the pressures of the deep oceans, and can communicate with ocean life including mammals. Has enhanced speed as well. He is versed with weapons like swords, and his indestructible trident. Has no qualms about killing, he will kill if the situation calls for it.

Is he as heroic as Superman or WW or Batman? Hell yeah he is, he is very noble and would give his life for any of the leaguers or a human being, even if such person made jokes about him. He stands for justice in all situations.

I'll go as far as to say that if AQ made a move to rule the world he could very well succeed. Tales like Flashpoint and Throne of Atlantis give glimpses to such scenario.

he deserves a movie the abyss would be terrifying with goblin sharks and whatever else is down their. The oil rig scene in MoS is what i think Aquaman would have. No Hawaiian waters in his movie just dark murky waters fighting sea monsters, the Trench and guys(Atlantean's) who's strength and durability are able to withstand the depths of the ocean.

Always that he and the Atlantean's were underused. Maybe rise the continent and he's the king/ambassador/hero of their land or make them more lagoon boy like that his appearance was the mark of a king. Atlantean's have their strength/durability and reverse Black Manta suits that Ocean Master and his fraction tries to take over.

Both Pre-Crisis and Pre-52 Aquaman can and have paralyzed Superman on the spot via telepathy.

He could turn Superman into a vegetable just as easily as MMH, if he wanted to.

Aquaman isn't even necessary to be in the Justice League, let alome the most impressive member.

Superman and Diana and Green Lantern are just as dangerous if not more dangerous.

the other heavy hitters are all effective on land, in the water, in the air and in outer space. there is no point to making a character that strong and then limiting his usefulness too water. (and yes I know he still has powers on land, but some of his powers are void (communication with sea creatures does no good when you're on a land locked part of the globe. and he's literaly just way stronger and faster underwater.

1 - his powers are the same on land and water

2- he doesn't talk to fish. Its telepathy. And it works on other beings.

3- Aquaman is the best leader of the 7 members and its not even close. The only reason he doesn't lead the justice league is Batman is more popularity - that's it. He's even Lead the JLA in the past, because he's a natural born leader. He's King of an entire Nation, has lead his own team and even butts head with Batman over leading the league, because Aquaman the best at it.

The OP of this post is pretty much a joke and just a fanboy crying, but make no mistake. Aquaman is a great leaguer for the reasons I just gave and more. And anyone's who actually read his books knows this - the only reason he doesn't play bigger roles is lack of popularity. He is a phenomenal character. I've yet to find someone who's actually spent a good amount of time reading him that doesn't like him.

@franchise1590: I could say MM isn't necessary in the JL with Superman around, or why the need for a Batman in the JL? but that is not the point. Let me put it this way. Without the JL around, AQ could still fight an alien invasion with only his Atlantean resources ( and in fact he did in the old universe). AQ could stomp all the Batman Rogues at the same time. AQ can fight Ares just like WW would, he could also hold his own against Metallo if need be. You can't make such claims with Batman.

I own just about most modern appearances of AQuaman since the late 80's. Next time you make an argument try not to condescend another poster to state your opinion.

Your argument was presented in a very fanboy-ish manner. IE: Downplaying and/or insulting other characters to build up the one you're talking about.

I don't have a problem with your views. Aquaman is my favorite character, but your presentation in the OP was lacking.
