McDuffie rocks at taking concepts that could be completely awesome and then turning them into something mediocre. He usually does this by not spending enough time on the concept. So far he's done about fifty, short, jumbled little stories instead of just a few awesome ones.
And this story had so much... potential. A world where the Justice League has no Trinity. Sort of seems like a world in a bad position. (Anyone whose read Trinity... This missing Trinity has absolutely no correlation to the missing Trinity in that issue.) Two of the members of Trinity exist, but neither are members of the Justice League. In fact the Anasi version of Batman is sort of like a villain. Before reading the issue, I thought that Vixen might have all this trouble trying to get the Justice League to unite, since Wonder Woman is retired and Batman's an outlaw... But no. It takes her roughly three pages to convince Bruce to help her and about two to convince Diana to help her. [Don't even get me started on Anasi's Wonder Woman, either. She should be nicknamed SuperWimp, because apparently the only thing in the world she cares about is her husband. ]
The token resistance to Vixen's idea of changing the world does come, however. But it's clearly just because of Anasi's influence because these are some of the wimpest characters I've ever seen. No way they try to attack Vixen on their own.
Somehow, Vixen manages to magically contact her Justice League, who take on the Wimp League. [Three guesses who wins.] She begins talking to Anasi, who reveals that the whole thing was just a test. Wow.
The whole test thing explains why McDuffie didn't want to take very much time on the story, but it still doesn't make the story seem realistic. Pretty much the only thing the issue is good for is as a dedication to the character of Vixen. She manages to survive the Wimp League with her sanity intact, which is pretty amazing. Especially considering the one fat white dude who has the ability to change into a black dude with a very large afro. Yeah, I think McDuffie took a LSD-break during the process of writing the story. Either that or the scene was his idea of a joke.
We've all seen better writing from this writer and I hope we see some more in the future. However, if the work continues at this quality, it might be time to wrangle up a new author for JLA. Soon.
