Explosive decompression rocks the satellite headquarters of the Justice League of America, jeopardizing the lives of all on board. J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter From Mars, pilots a shuttle away from the satellite. His exit is responsible for the hull breach which may cost him the lives of his comrades. The Martian Manhunter closes on the flagship of the Martian fleet, The Vnegenace, only to have his shuttle craft destroyed before he can get within firing range. The United Nations acknowledges the heavy casualties the world's military forces have suffered. Soberingly, not one Martian ship has been downed.
The President of the United States of America, Ronald Reagan, and the Soviet Premier consider the nuclear option. Reagan asks for two hours, before initiating the launch, to give the Justice League of America a chance to turn the tide of war. Martain scouts board the satellite headquarters of the Justice League of America. The Black Canary deals with the scouts. J'en, the Martian Manhunter's former lover, blasts her way off the Vengeance, to render aid to J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter From Mars. The Hawkwoman, and the Hawkman, strike back at the Martian fleet.
A Martian platoon boards the satellite headquarters of the Justice League Of America. The Elongated Man, and Zatanna, deal with the platoon. Noticing the absence of Firestorm, the Nuclear Man, the Elongated Man goes in search of him. Firestorm, the Nuclear Man, regains consciousness. Believing the Justice League of America has asphyxiated in the airless void of space, and that the Martian Manhunter has betrayed them, Firestorm, the Nuclear Man seeks vengeance. J'en revives J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter From Mars.
The Martian Manhunter intends to challenge the Martian commander, known as The Marshall. J'en raises her weapon to stop him, but finds she cannot bring herself to kill the man she loves. Reagan authorizes the use of nuclear weapons. The Hawkwoman, and the Hawkman, place their starship directly between the Martian fleet, and Earth. The Marshall gives the order to attack. J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter From Mars, confronts the Marshall. A trial by combat ensues. Martian military commanders are surprised by the Martian Manhunter's courage, having been led to believe he was a coward, and a traitor.
The Marshall turns invisible, a violation of the rules of honorable combat. Despite this tactic, the Marshall is defeated by J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter From Mars. Bel Juz, the Marshall's woman, grabs a blaster, and tries to murder the Martian Manhunter herself. Bel Juz is disarmed by Firestorm, the Nuclear Man. The Martian fleet withdraws. The nations of the world abort their nuclear strike. Though the Martians have seen the error of their ways, they nonetheless exile J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter From Mars to Earth.
