Justice League of America - Count Down to the End
The Good
It looks like the story is finally coming to a head in this week's issue. Stargirl has found Firestorm who has been acting as the prison for the Justice League during the Forever Evil event.
The Bad
Meh. The problem with this book is that it feels very erratic to me. There are far too many flash back sequences that break up action scenes that don't feel coherent to me. For example (and this isn't the only one I could have chosen) but what is going on as Stargirl and Despero fight around the ship carrying Firestorm? It looks like there is two panels of Despero breaking free of the same rubble heap to get back into the fray? The art is good but the sequence and lay out is a mess.
The Verdict
I had such high hopes for this book when it started. It had a unique cast of leaguers, but since Jeff Lemire has left the book it has all seemed to fall apart. The story feels slow and drug out. Honestly, how many panels do we need to see of Stargirl flying towards a ship? Or of *SPOLIERS* the Manhunter dieing? The scenes are broken up and fragmented and make the story hard to follow. And this is a team in the thick of it, fighting to find and free the imprisoned Justice League! But they don't even mention half the team. Ok, so Catwoman is off with Batman in the pages of Forever Evil. Trevor is accounted for in the pages of A.R.G.U.S. It can be argued that Vibe has been in another dimension (though that hasn't been a problem with other titles that clearly do not coincide with Forever Evil). The Green Arrow has been embroiled in the Outsiders War (but again see my thoughts on Vibe. These solo title are not directly tied into Forever Evil so these team members not even being a second thought bothers me.) So where the heck are Hawkman and Katana? Neither have been mentioned at all since the Leagues fought over Pandora's Box.
Extra Thoughts
When stories don't flow right it irks me. When characters are forgotten about and never mentioned again, it irks me. At this point, if this book weren't ending anyway, it would likely be on my list to cancel for my subscriptions.
