This Ain't Your Daddy's Justice League
In 1987, DC decided to overhaul the entire Justice League roster and start from scratch. The previous incarnation had been based in Detroit and wasn't seeing a great deal of success. The reins of the book were handed to Keith Giffen, JM Dematteis and a young artist named Kevin Maguire.
The Story:
Outside of Batman & Martian Manhunter, the roster was entirely new. Blue Beetle, Captain Marvel, Black Canary, Guy Gardner, Dr Light (Hoshi), Mister Miracle, Dr. Fate & Booster Gold all joined the ranks. There are a couple of gust appearances/cameos by Superman and Hal Jordan but no one else from the original league.
The comic takes place in the 1980's so we get a steady diet of 1980s issues to start off with. A group of heroes from a dying Earth journey to ours to neutralize the world's nuclear weapons stockpile. This leads directly to tensions between the new team and the Soviet Union.
Another recurring theme throughout the first arc is the team's tensions with one Guy Gardner. We get a series of tense, yet hilarious showdowns between Guy and just about every one else on the team. This comes to a head when he challenges Batman head on and the results are pretty hilarious.
Overall:
I'm not a huge fan of going back and reading comics from the 80s but this one is pretty good. The strengths of this book are the humor, the characters and how the writers bring them all together. The art is pretty good despite being somewhat dated. If you're looking for a comic that feels more like a sitcom or if you're a fan of any of these characters I'd recommend it highly.
