JLB 2.0 Issue 11 (Some Spoilers Included)

    The Good

This issue establishes just how huge the scale of Brainiac's invasion is by revealing how he is simultaneously attacking Oa, Thanagar, and New Apokolips while taking over the Earth. There's a nice reference to the events of Justice League Beyond's "Konstriction" in which the JLB received help from the Thanagarians and Green Lantern Corps in order to stop the Ouroburos from destroying Earth.

Christos Gage continues to keep the surprises coming, one of which was revealing just how Brainiac was able to return. Brainiac's comeback is directly tied to an episode of Justice League Unlimited ("Alive") and there's also a reference to the events of JLU's "Divided We Fall". Both of these instances further strengthen the continuity between the Beyond Universe and the DCAU.

Some new characters are introduced in this issue; and by "new" I really mean old characters that have gotten the "Beyond" treatment. I can't wait to see how this develops out in later issues as they help in the fight against Brainiac.

    The Bad

This is really nitpicky but I find a little hard to believe that out of all the magic users in the DC universe, Flash was only able to find about five people that could help the JLB. Also, Brainiac is taking over all of Earth's technology right? So where are the synthoids?

The Zeta Project (a 2-season spin-off series from the Batman Beyond tv series) established that in the Beyond timeframe, the US government uses hundreds of synthoid Infiltration Units for various acts of espionage and assassination. Wouldn't Brainiac have taken over the government's synthoids along with the rest of their tech systems?

While I'm on the subject of The Zeta Project, this series followed one synthoid named Zeta that gained self-awareness and rebelled against the government. The Zeta Project was unique because while Batman Beyond primarily took place in Neo-Gotham City, Zeta had adventures all over the country which expanded the Beyond Universe exponentially. It would be nice to see Zeta and his supporting cast (Ro Rowan, Bucky Buenaventura) make an appearance in JLB 2.0 or Batman Beyond 2.0 because without him it feels like a huge part of the Beyond Universe is being ignored.

    The Verdict

    4/5.
