Justice League #7

Ok, I know a lot of people think that this issue wasn't the best, and I was among them until I realized what Johns was trying to do with this issue. Like everyone, I wanted to see the dynamics of the Justice League more in depth: how they work as a team, what they've done in the past 5 years, etc. And I have to say, I was a little disappointed when I didn't see that. However, by the time I was done with the issue, I realized that that's not what this issue was meant to be about. Johns is trying to build the world around the Justice League before he delves into their own personal little clique. Johns wants us to see the way the Justice League has impacted the world around them and show us how people receive them. He wants to show us how the public feels about them, how the government feels about them, and how people like Etta and Steve feel about them. All of which are goals he accomplishes quite effectively. So, by judging this issue based on the criteria of what Johns is trying to do and not by what I wanted to do with the issue, I have to say that its a success. Sure, there are some flaws. Some of the remarks from the people are a little iffy, like when that one guy suggested that the JLA could "reform education" and the acronym A.R.G.U.S. is a little...hard to swallow. However, its not a bad issue by any means.

Plus, Johns was able to take Steve Trevor, a character who I did not give two craps about before, and turned him into a character who I now view as not only vital to the book, but one who's relationship with Diana I am interested in seeing develop. Johns managed, in only a few pages, to do something with Steve Trevor that no other creative team since the original Crisis has been able to do or was too afraid to even attempt. Bravo, Mr. Johns.
