They're just trying compete with Marvel since Marvel is making so much money via movies and cartoons. I think the relaunch in a business sense is sound. I was intimidated by Batman and Superman comics being in the 700's and 800's I finally checked out Detective Comics after hearing how good Scott Snyder's run. Big number can be intimidating if you're a newer reader or just don't want to start in the middle of something and don't know where to jump on and start reading.
In their defense, Marvel/Disney has a pressing advantage of having several different movie houses to look over their various properties, whereas DC/WB is locked into one which has more than one responsibility to handle, including those outside of the comic book genre.
The jumping the shark phrase needs to be rethought. That was one of Happy Day's most watched episodes when it aired. As silly as it was it was still successful. Just saying.
